GROBY, (Leicestershire) 5 m. from Leicester, on the N. side of Leicester-Forest, a rich large manor, which came by the Earls of Leicester and the Quincys to the Ferrars family, who were a long time Barons of Groby, till it was conveyed by the marriage of a daughter to the Grays; from whom it came by an attainder to the crown, where it remained, till K. James I. restored Sir Henry Gray to his ancestors honour, and created him Baron Gray of Groby; but K. Charles I. made his grandson Earl of Stamford. It was once a Mt. T. by the procurement of Henry Ld. Ferrars, in the R. of Edw. III. but it has been long discontinued. Here were also a castle and chapel. The Earl of Stamford has a fine park here.
