HAMPTON-IN-ARDEN, (Warwickshire) on the W. side of the Blith, to the N. E. of Solihul. 'Tis a large p. with divers hamlets; and the manor bel. formerly to the family of Arden, one of whom obtained a Mt. here on Tu. with a Fair on St. Luke's, and the days before and after; but the Mt. has been long disused. Here were formerly 2 parks; in one of which stood the manor-house and a castle, of which the intrenchments are yet to be seen, and are called the Castle-Hills. It came, in the R. of K. Edw. III. to Sir John Peche, and went afterwards by marriage to Sir Will. Montfort; in whose family it continued many descents, till the attainder of Simon Montfort, in the R. of Hen. VII. for assisting Perkin Warbeck, when it was forfeited to the crown. In 1643 the spire of the Ch. was beat down, and the steeple and body of it much rent by thunder and lightning. Here is a ch. sc.
