HATFIELD-PEVEREL, (Essex) near Witham, in the road from Chelmsford, took name from Ranulph de Peverel, whose wife having been concubine to Will. the Conq. founded a nunnery here, to attone for her guilt, and lies buried in the Ch. but at the Diss. it was given to Giles Leigh, of Walton upon Thames, from whom by marriage of the heiress it came to the ancestors of Sir Geo. Alleyn, Bt. and was lately in the possession of Lady Howard, (the relict of Francis Thompson of Yorkshire) who married Geo. Ld. Howard, eldest son of Henry D. of Norfolk.
