HAVERING AT BOWER, (Essex) the name, as it is said in Camden, from a ring given there by a stranger to Edw. the Conf. as a present from St. John the Evangelist; which Mr. Weaver supposes confirmed by the remnants of a picture in the E. window of the S. aile of Rumford-Ch. under which is written Johannes per peregrines misit Regi Edvardo, &c. K. Hen. VIII. used to come hither, for the pleasure of hunting in the forest; and it was the ancient retiring-place of the Ks. of England. Here are 2 chapels; one a peculiar royal chapel for the K. and his houshold, the other for the officers, foresters, and inh. which is a chapel of ease to Horn-Church; but having no right of burial, they carry all their dead to the chapel of Rumford.
