HEMPSTED, (Gloucestershire) bet. Glocester and Lanthony, to whose priory it once bel. and near Newark-House, the seat of the late Ld. Scudamore, and now of Mr. Lyons, is a p. by the Severn, about 6 m. in com. At the Diss. it was given to Tho. Atkyns, the ancestor of the late Sir Rob. Atkyns. The great tithes, with some land and the liberty of fishing in the Severn, were granted by Hen. VIII. to Arthur Porter, Esq; and the small tithes by Q. Eliz. to Sir Chr. Hutton.
