*HIGHAM-FERRIS, (Northamptonshire) or HIGHAM-FERRERS, 51 cm. 59 mm. from London, once one of the K's. manors, took the latter name from the Ferrers family, and bel. to the D. of Lancaster formerly, who had a castle here near the Ch. the ruins of which are still visible; and the former, from its situation on a rising ground, descending to the Nen on the N.W. Henry Chicheley, Abp. of Canterbury, a native of this place, founded a college in it for secular clerks and prebendaries, as likewise a hos. for the poor. 'Tis a small, but clean, dry, healthful and pleasant T. and is a royal manor, as part of the duchy of Lancaster. It has a handsome Ch. with a lofty spire. In the R. of Philip and Mary, it was made a Bor. and corp. consisting of a mayor, steward, recorder, 7 ald. 13 capital burgesses and commonalty, with power to send one member to Pt. and has a fr. sc. besides the almsh. for 12 men, and 1 woman. The Mt. is on S. the Fairs Feb. 24, June 17, Sept. 20, and Nov. 25.
