KIN'GS-NOTH, (Kent) on the S. side of Ashford, was once the manor and seat of a family of that name. It being forfeited afterwards to the crown, K. Rich. II. gave it to Sir Tho. Brown, of Bechworth-Castle in Surry, with a charter for a park and free-warren, and a Fair on Sept. 29. The principal part of it being afterwards sold to cardinal Kemp, he settled it, in the R. of Hen. VI. on his college at Wye; but K. Hen. VIII. gave it to Ld. Cromwell, afterwards E. of Essex; upon whose attainder it reverted to the K. who disposed of one moiety of it to Sir John Baker, whose successor sold it to Mr. Powel of Ewherst; and the other moiety remained in the crown, till Q. Eliz. granted it to her kinsman, Hen. Carey, who was afterwards Ld. Hunsdon; whose grandson, Henry E. of Dover, conveyed it to Sir Tho. Finch, whose posterity, the Es. of Winchelsea and Nottingham, have enjoyed it since.
