KNEBWORTH, (Hertfordshire) bet. Hartford and Hitching, bel. in the R. of Edw. I. to Rob. de Hoo, who obtained a Mt. here on F. and a Fair at Midsummer; in the next R. to Tho. de Brotherton, 5th son to K. Edw. I. by whose daughter it went, in marriage, to John de Segrave, and after his decease to her 2d husband, Sir Walter Manny. Upon her death it went to John Hotoft, and soon after to Sir Tho. Bourchier, who sold it, in the R. of Hen. VII. to Rob. Lytton of Derbyshire, in whose family it has continued to this day; for though in the R. of Cha. II. Sir Will. Lytton gave it to Sir Geo. Strode's eldest son, he left it to Will. Robinson Lytton. The manor-house stands in a large park, well wooded, and stocked with the best deer in the Co. Its situation is on a hill, or knap, from whence it has the name.
