LANCHESTER, (Durham) to the N. W. of Durham, stands in the Watlingstreet road, on the top of one hill overlooked by another, and was, no doubt, formerly a Roman station. It also appears by the ruins, to have been much larger once than it is now, and to have been walled round. Here is a handsome Ch. which before the Ref. was endowed with a deanery and prebends.
