LANGLEY-KING'S, (Hertfordshire) on the W. side of the r. Bulbourn or the Hunton, as Abbats-Langley is on the E. had once a royal palace built by Hen. III. K. Edw. III. gave the manor to a priory here. K. Rich. II. and his Q. with many of the nobility, kept a Christmas here; and in its mon. he was buried, though afterwards removed to Westminster by K. Hen. V. Here was also born and buried Edmund D. of York (son of Edw. III.) called Edmund of Langley; and here were buried many others of that family. K. Hen. VII. settled the manor and park on his Q. Catherine, as did Hen. VIII. on his Q. Ann. K. James I. settled the scite of the mon. upon Edw. Newport and John Compton; after which it descended to William Houlker, by whose heirs the buildings of it were all demolished. The palace, park, and manor, were given by K. Jam. I. to his eldest son Pr. Henry; and after his decease to Pr. Charles his only surviving son, who, when on the throne, leased the park to Sir Cha. Morison for 99 years; and after that term to Sir Baptist Hicks, his heirs and assigns, for ever. The manor passed through divers hands to Tho. Houlker of London; whose son sold it to Henry Smith, whose son did lately, if he does not still, possess it.
