MELTON-MOWBRAY, (Leicestershire) 82 cm. 104 mm. from London, is a large well-built T. in a fertile soil, with a Mt. on Tu. the most considerable for cattle of any in this part of the Km. and Fairs on Tu. after Epiph. Whit-Tu. and Aug. 10. It is almost encompassed with a little r. called the Eye, over which it has two fine bridges, and has a large handsome Ch. with a fr. sc. Here are frequent horse-races. Its ancient Lds. were the Mowbrays. K. Henry VIII. granted the manor to the Lady Ann Cleve for her life, and the reversion to John Dudley, E. of Warwick; but it is now, or was lately, the demesne of the Es. of Berkley.
