MERDEN, (Hertfordshire) or MERIDEN, on the N. W. side of Hertford, bel. formerly to the abbey of St. Albans; but at the Diss. it was granted by K. Hen. VIII. to Anth. Denny, Esq; his groom of the stole; whose descendants enjoyed it till the R. of Jam. I. when the Ld. Denny of Waltham-Holy-Cross sold it to Rob. Briscoe, Esq; who alienated it to Tho. Ewer of the Lea; whose grandson sold it to Mr. Rogers of Isleworth.
