NORTHAM, (Devon) bet. Barnstaple-Bay and Biddiford, bel. anciently to a mon. at Caen in Normandy. It is famous for breeding mariners; and its steeple is a sea-mark. There is a fine plain here, called the Burroughs, along the sea; from which it is defended by a ridge of chesil, abounding with sea-holly, whose roots are called eringo. The Leighs family have had an estate in this p. for divers descents.
