RUMSEY, (Hampshire) on the r. Tese, or Test, which runs hence to Southampton-Bay, 63 cm. 78 mm. from London, is a pretty large old T. in the road from Salisbury to Southampton, governed by a mayor, recorder, 6 ald. and 12 burgesses, and much inhabited by clothiers. It had a nunnery, of which K. Stephen's only daughter was abbess. K. Edward and his son Alfred were buried in the old Ch. here, which is, or was very lately, standing. The new Ch. is a noble pile, arched with stone in form of a cross. Sir Will. Petty, the great mathematician, was born here, The Mt. is on S. Fairs on Easter-M. Aug. 15, and Oct. 28.
