WARXWORTH, (Northumberland) S.E. of Alnewick, near the mouth of the Coquet r. is a castle and manor, which bel. anciently to the Claverings; but came to the crown in the R. of Edward III. who bestowed it on Hen. Piercy, the ancestor of the Earls of Northumberland, and now gives title of Baron to the D. of Somerset. In the castle is a chapel admirably cut out in a rock, and fully funished, without either beams or rafters. On the S. E. side, near the sea, are salt-pans.
