Adderley Registers.
ADDERLEY is a small village and parish in the extreme north of Shropshire, four miles from Market Drayton, and includes the townships of Adderley, Spoonley, and (ecclesiastically) Shavington. It is in the diocese of Lichfield., archdeaconry of Salop, rural-deanery nf Hodnet, and hundred of North Bradford. It has an area of 3,938 acres, and a population of 468 in 1891. In 1676 there were 198 inhabitants over the age of 16, of whom two were Nonconformists.
The Parish Register Abstract of 1831 contains this information about the Adderley Registers:-
"Adderley R. No. I contains Baptisms, Burials, 1692-1772; Marriages, 1692-1763. No. II. Bap. Bur. 1773-1812. No. III. Marr.. 1754-1812".
Volume I extends from 1692 to 1772, and contains 31 leaves of parchment measuring, 8 by 12 1/4 inches. Volume II, 1782-1812, measures 14 by 9 1/2 inches, and contains 26 leaves, 14 only of which are used. Vol. III is a large calf-bound printed Marriage Register, of which 19 pages have been used, having 154 entries.
In Saxon times "Eldredelei", as it was then written, was held by Edric, a "free man", who, probably, is identical with Edric Sylvaticus, whose stand against the Norman power is still remembered in Shropshire tradition. After the Conquest the manor passed into the hands of Nigel, a clerk, and physician to Earl Roger de Montgomery, who, in 1086, held the four manors of Adderley, Shavington, Spoonley and Cloverley, which, after his time, were consolidated into one manor, of which Adderley was the head. Adderley consisted then of 3 hides, with arable land sufficient to employ 61 ox teams, but there was only one team on the demesne land, and one with the 4 villeins and 2 neatherds, who represented the population. There were 2 Hayes (enclosed tracts of woodland), and altogether the manor was of the same yearly value of 15s. as it had been under its Saxon lord. Shavington was estimated at half-a-hide, and under Dodo, the franklin, its Saxon owner, had been worth 122. yearly. Nigel found it waste, but in 1086 its value had been raised to 15s. There was land for four teams, but on the demesne was only half a team, and another half-team with the a Serfs and 3 Borders. Spoonley still lay

waste in 1086, though when the Saxon franklin, Dunning, held it, it was valued at 20s. per annum. It was estimated as 1 hide, with sufficient arable land for 2 teams. Calverhall, unlike Spoonley and Shavington, is not now in the parish of Adderley. It had been two manors in Saxon times, held by the franklins Elmaer and Eluui, when it was worth ? per annum. Under Nigel it yielded 20s. and the rent of a hawk. It was estimated as 1 hide and 3 virgates, with land for 6 teams. There was one team in demesne and one with the 2 neatherds and 4 villeins, and the manor wood could fatten 20 swine.
Nigel's possessions seem to have passed to Earl Hugh de Montgomery, and later, after the rebellion of Earl Robert de Belesme, they seem to have been in the hands of the King, and granted by him to Alan de Dunstanvill. Between 1175 and 1190, Walter de Dunstanvill made a park at Adderley, in which was included a piece of woodland belonging to the Abbey of Shrewsbury's manor of Betton under Lyme, for which Walter gave in exchange a similar piece near Ridgwardine, which had been an isolated portion of Adderley. In 1255, Adderley, Spoonley, and Shavington were held as one manor by Walter de Dunstanvill (II), who, about 1219, had given rents of 10s. in Calverhall and 5s. in Shavington to Shrewsbury Abbey. He also allowed by special deed that the Canons of Haughmond should pass through his manor of Adderley without hindrance when going backwards and forwards to "Le Wiche" and elsewhere with things for their own use. In 1284 Adderley and its members (including Calverhall) were held by John de la Mare in right of his wife Petronilla. Shavington was held under him by Henry de Shavington, and Calverhall by Bogo de Knovill, Lord of Whitchurch, and under him by William de Calverhall. In 1283 John de la Mere had a grant of Free Warren in Adderley. On his death, William de Montfort, the heir to the manor, sold it, with other estates, to Bartholomew de Badlesmere.
In 1315, Bartholomew received permission from Edward II to hold a weekly market on Thursdays at Adderley, and a yearly fair on the vigil day, and morrow of St. Peter and St. Paul (June 28, 29, 30). In 1322, Bartholomew was on the rebel side at the battle of Boroughbridge, where he was taken prisoner, and subsequently executed. Adderley was restored to his son, Giles de Badlesmere, and on his death passed to the youngest of his four sisters, Margery, wife of William, Lord Roos of Hamlake. Their descendants were lords of the manor and patrons of the Church, till the attainder of Thomas, Lord Roos, in 1468.
In the sixteenth century, Adderley and Stoke on Tern were among the estates of Sir Rowland Hill, Lord Mayor of London in 1549, and they passed with one of his sisters and co-heiresses to her husband, John Gratewood. Their son, William, Sheriff of Shropshire in 1572, died childless, and was succeeded by his sister and co-heiress, Alice, wife of

Reginald Corbet of Fits, one of the Judges of the Queen's Bench, third son of Sir Robert Corbet of Morton Corbet. His grandson, John, who was created a baronet in 1627, took the side of the Parliament in the Civil War, though his eldest son compounded in 1650 as a Royalist. His great grandson, Sir Robert, was succeeded at Adderley by his son William, and he by his brother Henry, the Rector, on whose death the estates passed to his nephew, Corbet D'Avenant, who took the name of Corbet, and was created a Baronet in 1786. Sir Corbet Corbet died in 1823, leaving his estates to Richard, second son of Sir Andrew Corbet of Acton Reynald, with whose family the estate and advowson remain.
Shavington was, from the early sixteenth century, the home of the Needham family. Sir Robert Needham, Sheriff of Shropshire in 1529, bought the estate in 1506, but Sir John Needham, a Judge of the Common Pleas in 1457, his great-uncle, had been connected with it. In 1449, a licence was given by the Bishop of Lichfield to Sir Robert Catryke, Rector of Adderley, and Sir John Horton, celebrating in the chapel of Wrenbury, authorising them to perform the marriage of John Starkey and Agnes Needham in the "chapel or oratory of the mansion of John Needham". According to the "Heralds' Visitation", Agnes was a sister of Sir John. Sir Robert, great-grandson of the Sheriff of 1529, received the title of Viscount Kilmorey in 1625, and in 1822 his descendant was created Earl of Kilmorey. Shavington remained with the Needhams till recent years. It now belongs to the Heywood-Lonsdale family. Spoonley, like Adderley, is a manor of the Corbets, but in 1440 the Egerton family seem to have had an interest in it. In that year John Styche made complaint that Philip Egerton, late of Spoonley, had made war against him for five years, "as in lying in wait to slay him, and hath beaten and maimed his tenants, servants, and cousins, and the said John Styche and others out of the country".
The Church, dedicated to St. Peter, was rebuilt, with the exception of the Shavington chapel, in 1801, of stone lined with brick. The tower, as the Register mentions, dates from the time of Queen Anne. The Shavington chapel was the subject, during the seventeenth century, of many disputes between the Needhams and their neighbours regarding the right of burial.
There are several monuments preserved from the earlier Church. One is the brass of an unknown ecclesiastic, either an abbot or a bishop, but the head is missing. Another brass bears the effigies of a knight in armour and his wife and nine children. It bears the following inscription:- "Here lieth buryed under this stone the bodes of Syr Robert Nedeham Knight and dame Agnes his wyffe daughter of John Maynwaring of penes esquire which sayd Robert deceassed the iiii daye of June Anno domini 1556 and the sayd Agnes deceassed the ii daye of Mays Anno domini 1560".

The font is curious, and may be of Norman date with the Latin inscription added later upon the square top. The words are said to run thus:
"Hic male primus homo Fruitur cum conjuge porno".
The Church was founded before 1291, when it appears in the Taxation of Pope Nicholas as worth £5 per annum. It is valued in the King's Books at £11 6s.

The patronage of the rectory was long vested in the Corbet family. In 1628 and 1652, Sir John Corbet, Bart., presented to the living; in 1683, Richard Jencks, gent.; in 1679, John Corbett; in 1730 and 1735, Sir Robert Corbett, Bart.; and in 1792, Henry Calveley Cotton, Esq. The patronage is still vested in the Corbet family.
The Register was transcribed by Miss A.M. Auden, and the proof-sheets, as they passed through the press were collated by Miss Auden and the present Rector, the Rev. C.J. Winer. It was copied by kind permission of the Rev. Athelstan Corbet, the late Rector, and is now printed by that of his successor.
