Lee Brockhurst Registers.

LEE BROCKHURST is a small parish and village situate on the road from Shrewsbury to Whitchurch, about ten miles north of Shrewsbury and three miles south-east of Wem, in the hundred of North Bradford, rural deanery of Wem, archdeaconry of Salop, and diocese of Lichfield. The parish includes in its bounds Harcot Park, and parts of Moston and Bessford. The river Roden runs through the parish. Its area is about 580 acres. The population of Lee Brockhurst in 1801 was 137; in 1831, 157; in 1841, 165; in 1881, it had fallen to 97; in 1901, it was 109; in 1911, 97; and in 1921, it was 110. Near Lee Bridge are some lofty rocks of red sandstone, and hard by is an obelisk erected by the tenantry in 1842 to the Corbet family. The kennels of the North Shropshire Fox-hounds are in this parish.

As regards the etymology, in Domesday Book the place is called Lege, " a tract of open ground." In 1272 it is Legh-subtus- Brockhirst. Hurst means " a copse, a wooded hill." A tract of woodland which lay about here was called Brockhurst, and in after times gave a distinctive name to two vills, viz., Lee and Preston. Mr. Bowcock suggests that Brock may be either brook or badger; so that Brockhurst means " the lea under the brook (or badger) wood."

In Saxon times Uluiet, Wictric, and Elfac held Lege as three manors. At the Domesday Survey Normannus Venator held Lege under Earl Roger. It was a manor of one hide. He found it waste, but improved it, so that it was worth £3 per annum. There was a mill of 6s. annual value. Normannus gave Boleley (Booley), which was then an outlying member of Lee Brockhurst, to Shrewsbury Abbey. The Domesday manors of Normannus descended to the family of Pichford. It was held under them by the De Burghs. Lee Brockhurst afterwards passed to the Audleys. In 1316 Nicholas de Audley is styled Lord of Leye subtus Brochurst.

Moston was held in Saxon times by Dodo and Ulgar as two manors. At Domesday Roger Venator (a brother of Normannus) held Mostune under Earl Roger. It was a manor of two hides. There was arable land for four oxteams. It was worth 15s. per annum. Roger found it waste. Moston passed to Roger's Barony of Pulverbatch. One of these Barons enfeoffed Fitz Warin, under whom the de Hodnets held Moston. William de Hodnet settled Moston in 1301 on his daughter Matilda wife of William de Ludlow. Robert Corbet of Moreton who died in 1300, owned a messuage and virgate of land in Moston. He also purchased the manor of Besford from Roger Pryde, a Burgess of Shrewsbury, which manor Pryde had purchased from Henry de Erdynton. The Corbets also held Booley under Shrewsbury Abbey, and possibly other lands in Lee.

The following inhabitants of Leghe sub Brokhurste were assessed to the Subsidy of 1327, which was granted by Parliament to meet the expenses of the Scotch War:- Nicholas Martyn ijs. vjd.; Robert son of Thomas xvd.; Reginald Gogh xijd. qu.; William Gebbe ijs.; Richard

son of Richard xijd. And from Mostone these:- William Coco xiiijd.; Richard de Boleye ijs.; Roger Tassy xvd.; Hugh de Prestone xviijd.; Robert the Clerk xd.; Thomas son of Richard ixd.; John de Wykeshull xijd. The two last were sub-taxers, or assessors of the tax. The total sum collected from Lee and Moston was 16s.

Andrew Newnes of Lee Brockhurst (amongst others) paid 4s. to the Hearth Tax of 1673-4 for two hearths in Lee.

The manor of Lee eventually passed to the Hills of Hawkestone. Viscount Hill occurs as lord of the manor in 1851, and as recently as 1905. The 1917 P.O. Directory names Lord Marchamley as the lord. It is not at all clear who is lord of the manor at the present time.

THE CHURCH.

The Church of St. Peter consists of a 12th century nave, with Norman south doorway having zig-zag mouldings and columns with scolloped capitals, and two small well splayed Norman windows. The three-light square-headed window in the west wall is perhaps early Perpendicular, and the large rectangular window in the south wall is of the Elizabethan period. In 1884, the chancel was re-built, and a vestry added on the north side of the nave; the bell-gable for two bells was put up, the west wall partly re-built, and the south porch erected. The Communion table is Jacobean, but has been enlarged. The octagonal font is modern.

The Inventory of Church Goods, returned 3 May, 7 Edward VI (1553) by William Rolffe parson and William Grome and John Downe, churchwardens, mentions two bells, and one chalice of silver. The present Communion plate consists of a plain trumpet- shaped silver chalice, and circular silver paten engraved with the figure of Christ at a table with his hand held in blessing, both of about 1550 date; and a pewter alms dish and plain bowl. There are two bells; the smaller one, which is probably mediaeval, is 13 inches high, with diameter of 16 inches, and has no inscription; the larger one is 21 inches high, with diameter of 17 inches, and bears the inscription " COME AWAY MAKE NO DELAY. A.R. 1721." It is by Abraham Rudhall. [1] Near the Church on the north side is an oblong tumulus or barrow, in which some human bones are said to have been found.

The Rev. H. E. Postlethwaite, during his long Incumbency, made a great many improvements and additions to the Church. These include a new organ, lectern, and lamps, credence table, brass book-stands, re-glazing the west window, re-ventilating the Church, new porch with double oak doors, oak reredos and box for Communion plate (both carved by himself), iron railings round the Churchyard, &c. He also built the Church Hall and new Schools, &c.

There is no Vicarage House. The Incumbents have usually resided in Wem. At the Religious Census of Shropshire taken in 1676, there were at Lee Brockhurst (which was then in the Deanery of Shrewsbury) 40 Conformists, no Papists, and no Nonconformists. The patronage was from early times in the Lords of the Manor. Its early history is involved with that of Stanton upon Hineheath. In 1331 the Rectory of Stanton was appropriated to Haughmond Abbey, and a Vicar was appointed who was to serve Stanton Church and also Lee Brockhurst Chapel. The Abbot was to have one grange at Lee Brockhurst, whilst the Vicar was to

have a messuage and half-virgate of land in Lee Brockhurst, and the tithes of mills, gardens, milk, hay, &c. From this time (1331) until the dissolution of Haughmond Abbey in 1539, the Vicar of Stanton on Hineheath was also the Incumbent of Lee Brockhurst, and was presented by the Abbot of Haughmond.

James de Audley, the " Lord of Lye subtus Brochurste," disputed the right of patronage of Lee Chapel with Haughmond Abbey; but at length, on 7 February, 1336, the Baron renounced his claim to the patronage and to half a virgate of land in Lee, and was made a participator in all the spiritual benefits which the Abbey promised its benefactors.

I have no record how the patronage passed after the Reformation, but in 1727, Mr. Clayton was patron, and in the 18th century it came to the Walford family, who are still the patrons of Lee Brockhurst.

THE REGISTERS.

The Parish Register Abstract of 1831 giyes this brief account of the Registers:- Lee Brockhurst P.C., Nos. I., II., Bap., Bur., Marr., 1556-1706, 1715-1812.

Volume I. consists of 23 parchment leayes not uniform, of different sizes, not in chronological order, beginning 1566 and terminating 5 March, 1706. These leaves have been re-bound in boards and a parchment cover, size 12 by 7 inches, and lettered " Parish Register of Lee Brockhurst from A.D. 1566 to A.D. 1663." An attempt was originally made to divide the leaves into Weddings, Burials, and Baptisms, but was not strictly adhered to. The first three leaves contain Weddings, the first 21 entries (1569 to 1603) being numbered consecutively 1 to 21. Leaves five to eight contain Burials, the first 38 entries (1567 to 1602) being numbered consecutiyely 1 to 38. Leaves eight to thirteen contain Baptisms, the first 50 entries (1566 to 1600) being numbered consecutively 1 to 50.

To enable any particular entry to be readily found, the contents of each of the 23 leaves are noted here. Leaf 1 has one burial in Jan., 1662-3, and Weddings 1569-71. Leaves 2 and 3, Weddings 1572-1618. Leaf 4, Baptisms, 1609-19, and a baptism and a burial in 1652. Leaf 5, headed " Weddings," has a Burial 1653, 4 Baptisms 1660-63, and Burials 1568-76. Leaves 6 to 8 have Burials 1576-1655. Leaves 8 to 13, Baptisms 1566 to 1638. Leaf 14, Burials 1617-40. Leaf 15, Marriages 1627-40. Leaf 16, Baptisms 1640-43, a Burial 1645 and Marriage 1647, Baptisms 1647-49, and a Burial 1647. Leaf 17, a heading " The Register, &c. " and Burials and Baptisms 1658-62. Leaf 18, Baptisms and Burials

LEE BROCKHURST REGISTERS. vii.

1645-51, and a heading " The Register, &c. " Leaves 19, 20 and 21, Baptisms and Burials 1651-79. Leaf 22, Baptisms 1680-83, Marriages 1683-98, Baptisms and Burials 1699-1706. Leaf 23, Marriages and Baptisms 1673-93.

Volume II. was described in a return made to Lichfield on 26 May, 1813, as being " made of strong paper, and containing entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, which commence with a few extracts of the family of William Walford, copied out of the old Register, from 1696 to 1712. The other entries commence Oct. 9, 1715, and terminate Dec. 27, 1812." This Volume is now missing from the Register Safe, and it is not known where it is. [*]

Fortunately a verbatim copy was made of both Volumes by the late Mr. William Phillips in 1895 and 1896, and the present printed Register was made from his transcript. But in one respect it differs from the original Registers; instead of copying the entries in the order in which they stand in the Registers, he has separated the entries into Marriages, Burials and Baptisms, and entered them in his MS. Book in strict chronological order. The Rev. W.G.D. Fletcher, who has seen these Registers through the press, has carefully checked eyery entry in Volume I., in the order in which it stands in the original, with the printed proofs, so that no single entry might be omitted. In collating the proofs of Volume II., he has been dependent on Mr. Phillips's transcript. At the end of Volume II. is a statement about the augmentation of the Curacy, and a Terrier dated 1779, which are printed on pages 82 to 85.

Volume III. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837. Volume IV. has Baptisms from 1813, and Volume V. Burials from 1813, and both volumes are still in use. All three yolumes are Eyre and Spottiswood's Registers. It has been deemed advisable to print these Registers from 1813 to the close of 1837, as the Government Registration of Births, Marriages, and Deaths begins on January 1st, 1838. These Registers were copied, and seen through the press, by the Rev. W.G.D. Fletcher.

There are not many curious entries in the Register. In 1658 Ellenor Griffies, " regina mendicorum," was buried. Does this mean queen of the gypsies ? In 1651 a poor child, " born in the Church porch," was baptized; and in 1661 is the baptism of a child " without gossips." In 1653 is a eulogy in Latin on the death of Richard Hotchkis, by Thomas Cope; and in 1665 William Walford's death is described as " vitam cum morte mutavit." Robert Pugh, in 1780 and onwards during his incumbency, gives the totals of baptisms, burials, and marriages, each year and every ten years. In 1800 is a statement as to the number of farms, inhabited houses, families, cottages, persons employed in agriculture, trade, &c.; and also in 1811. The field names in the Terrier of 1779 are of interest.

The most important family named in the Register is that of Walford, who were landowners and Impropriators or Patrons of the Living. Other families of interest are those of Pitchford, Downes, Groome, Newnes, Brookes, Henshaw, and Heatley.

The grateful thanks of members are due to Dr. Watkins-Pitchford for a generous donation towards the cost of printing, and to the Rev. G.H. Grimes, the present Vicar, for kindly lending four Volumes, and for permission given to print these Registers, and to the Shrewsbury Public Library Committee for the loan of Mr. Phillips's MS. transcript.

[*] If any one who reads this Introduction can throw any light on the present whereabouts of Volume II, will they be so good as to communicate with the Vicar of Lee Brockhurst. It is very desirable that the missing Register should be found, and restored to its place in the Register Safe.

of the said Curacy, payable quarterly at Midsummer, Michaelmas,

The Gleve consists of a parcel of Land called the Hemp-yard, whereon the

A Piece called the Gorse Leasow, containing about two Acres, bounded on
the East with a Piece called the Moor on the West with pieces called the
Farmes.

that has been lately removed for the convenience of the inhabitants when
therein assembled), consists of one third part of the whole Building,
and belongs to, and is repaired by, Impropriator, or Lay Rector and
