Llanyblodwell, Smyrna Chapel.

Register of Births and Baptisms.

This is a large book, 15 1/4 inches tall and 9 1/2 inches broad, bound in leather boards. It is No. 16 of the Shropshire Non-Parochial Registers preserved at Somerset House. The entries are generally attested by the signatures of parents or nearest friends. There are two dates to each of the entries, the earlier one being the date of birth, and the later one the date of baptism. The children were all baptized by Edward Davies, of Treflach, the minister of the Chapel, except where otherwise stated. Smyrna Chapel was founded about the year 1825.

In this Register, the wife's maiden name is given, in parentheses.

Register of Baptisms solemnized with water in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, by the Minister of the Congregation of Protestant Dissenters of the Independent Denomination assembled for Religious Worship at Smyrna Chapel, in the parish of Llanyblodwell, in the Co. of Salop.

The superiority of this Form consists in the improved provision which it supplies of the union of an authenticated Register, not only of Baptisms, but also of Births. The Title of the Book is particularized, because it has been determined in the Ecclesiastical Courts that Baptism is not effectual unless it is performed " with Water, and in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."

The insertion of the place of birth may assist in the ascertainment of parochial settlements. The reference to the former name of the mother may contribute proof of the time and place of the birth, with which a minister is not personally acquainted, and which he cannot, therefore, legally or effectually attest.
