Oldbury Registers.

OLDBURY is a township, village and parish on the road from Bridgnorth to Cleobury Mortimer (Bridgnorth Station on the Severn Valley Branch of the Great Western Railway being in the parish), in the Chelmarsh Division of the Stottesden Hundred, Bridgnorth Rural Deanery, Ludlow Archdeaconry and Diocese of Hereford. The population in 1801 was 107, whilst in 1901 it had risen to 296.

Close to the north-eastern boundary of the parish, there in a fortified hill called Panpudding Hill, which local tradition connects with the siege of Bridgnorth by the Parliamentary troops in the reign of Charles I. It is very likely that cannon for the bombardment of the castle were placed on the top of the mound at that time, but the mound itself is of much older date. It most likely represents the site of one of Ethelfleda's castles, erected in 913, and probably destroyed before 1085. It stands 130 feet above the river Severn. It is a circular in formation on three of its aisles, and is artificially scarped. On the west side lie the strongest entrenchments, and here the fosse is 5 feet deep, and there ia a small bailey commanding the narrow portion of the hill. [1]

The Parish contains about 800 acres, and was originally a portion of the great Parish of Morville, but about the year 1138 Helyas de Constantine founded a Chapel and cemetery there, endowing it with about 30 acres of land and a mansion. Robert (de Betune), Bishop of Hereford from 1131 to 1143, consecrated the Chapel and cemetery " in defence of the poor," and ordered that the Churches of certain Parishes (of which Oldbury was one) "shall be subject to their Mother Church, as daughters, so that on the chief festivals the whole people shall repair to the Mother Church, and the Priest of the Mother Church shall cause the bodies of such deceased persons as he will, to be carried to the cemetery of the name." (Salop Chartulary, No. 339.) Part of the south wall of the present Church of St. Nicholas is old, but Cranage is of opinion that its rather large stones do not date so far back as the twelfth century. With this exception, the Church is modern, having been rebuilt in 1858 and 1862 by the exertions of the Rev. John Purton. It consists of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch, and western bell-turret. The only ancient fittings of the Church are the Laudian Altar-rails and the Bell, the three stamps on which indicate that the founder was Robert Crowch of London, who was working about 1440. In 1549 and 1740, there were three bells. The third bell seems to have disappeared between 1740 and 1752. The second bell was sold in 1862 when the ancient distinctive ' pigeon- cote' tower was replaced by a slender stone turret. There is a parochial tradition that this bell is now in the turret of the new Church at Jackfield. The Jacobean chest in the Chancel and the board on the west wall of the aisle, bearing the curious old Latin inscription, DISCE MORI MUNDO VIVERE DISCE DEO VIVE DIU SED VIVE DEO NAM VIVERE DEO EST VIVERE DIU, have only been placed in the Church during the incumbency of the present Rector. The oak panelling round the Church (the 200 panels of which are all of different design), was carved in the Parish and neighbourhood during the same period.

iv. OLDBURY REGISTERS.

The history of the Manor, as far as it can be traced in the Blakeway MSS., is as follows:-" One Elward held Aldeberie in the Saxon times, and it was rated to the Danegeld at a hide and three virgates. After the Conquest it was holden under Earl Roger by his Sheriff Rainald, but Ralph was the immediate tenant. The arable land was now increased to three carucates, one of which was demesne, and cultivated by seven servants: the other two were occupied by three Frenchmen, two cottars and a bordar. There was yet room for two more carucates. A mill, and a wood for one hundred swine formed appendage to this Manor."

The family of Fitz Alan succeeded, though it is not exactly known how, [2] to the possessions of Rainald the Sheriff, and became lords paramount of Oldbury. Under them, it was held by the family of Costentin, whose principal possession was Eton Costentin (Eaton Constantine). The history of the manor of Eaton Constantine and Oldbury is, at this time, and for some years after, the same. In 1290, Adam de Montgomeri, who married Isabella de Constantine, is found to have died seised of it, as a member of that superior manor. In 1316, the manor had passed by some unknown means into the hands of the celebrated Walter Langton, Bishop of Chester (Lichfield), who had filled the high stations of Chancellor and Lord Treasurer. The Bishop died in 1321, and the manor passed, probably by purchase, into the hands of Edward Peverell. Peverell, by Elizabeth his wife, had issue a daughter Margaret, who married William de la Pole, cousin german of the great Michael de la Pole, who, though son of a merchant of Hull, became Earl of Suffolk and Lord Chancellor of England. In 1358, it was sold to Henry le Goldsmith, a wealthy merchant of Bridgnorth, who twice represented the borough in Parliament. Mr. Goldsmith's daughter and heiress, Johanna, married John Langley, cousin and heir of Sir Geoffrey de Langley, Knight, of Warwickshire. Mrs. Langley died 1418, and was buried at Bridgnorth. In her epitaph, which is preserved in an Harleian MS., she is called Lady of Oldbury. In 1470, Isabella, relict of Walter Langley, of Over Sodington and Knolton, co. Glouc., was lady of the manor. She was daughter and heiress of William Pole and Margery his wife. This Margery was daughter of John Langley of Milcote, co. Warwick, who, in all probability, was husband of Johanna Goldsmith. Isabella's son William died seised of the manor in 1483. In 1550, it was in the hands of the Peyton family. It afterwards became the property of the Robsarts. After the death of Amy Robsart, Countess of Leicester in 1566, the Robsart estates passed to her father's sister, Lucy, wife of Edward Walpole of Houghton (ob. 1595), whose eldest son, John, succeeded to the reversion of the property, which included the estate of Oldbury, which reversion he sold in 1566 to Arthur, natural son of Sir John Robsart. He lived at Oldbury for many years, and was still there in 1595 with his wife Margaret, widow of Arthur Cocket of Sibton (Suffolk), although he had sold the manor in 1578 to Robert Greene and his heirs. In 1634 it was in the hands of Robert Smallbroke, who in that year sold it to Charles Cornwallis. The manor eventually passed into the Acton family, and Lord Acton is the present lord.

The following persons belonging to Oldbury were assessed to the Subsidy of 1327:- Nicholas Deveroys, John Crouk, William Hobald, William Bercar, Richard de Cleobury, John de Oldebury, Richard le Knyght, and Henry Osmund.

About the year 1141, Robert de Reding was " Rector of the Chapel " of Oldbury. Eyton says of him " Robert de Hastings, alias Hedding or Hedinges was sometime Rector of Oldbury. As Robert de Halechton, Allechtone or Aluhton (a name probably derived from some Houghton in Shropshire, where he may have resided), he occurs almost as frequently as under his first designation. Like other ecclesiastics of wealth and position, he seems to have been involved in secular affairs."

Nothing is known of any other Rector until 1277, when one John was Rector either of Oldbury or (possibly) Onibury. In June, 1299, " Master

[2] Eyton thinks it was by grant from Henry I. after his marriage with Queen Matilda, is whose suite the ancestor of the fitz Alans came.

OLDBURY REGISTERS. v.

Lucas de St. Leonard, Clerk," was appointed to Oldbury by the Abbot and Convent of Salop, but he was not instituted until June 11, 1300. In March, 1309, Master William de Pollileye, acolite, and in May, 1311, Master Stephen de Clinton, acolite, were appointed by the same patrons. The probable explanation of the delay in the institution of Master Lucas, and of the fact that his two immediate successors were in minor orders is that the Abbey of Salop, which was the patron, had got hold of the income of the benefice, which they enjoyed during vacancy, or when they appointed ' men of straw' to be nominal Rectors. (See Dr. Cutts " Parish Priests and their People in the Middle Ages in England," pp. 95-100). The appointment of acolites as Rectors was an evasion of a Canon of Otho 1237, which required that a man instituted into a Vicarage should be a Deacon at least, and proceed to take Priest's Orders in the course of the first year. It is not improbable that the two acolites were in temporary charge of the Benefits, for the Abbey of Shrewsbury, which had unconstitutionally assumed the position of Community Rector.

After the time of Stephen de Clinton, nothing beyond their bare names is known of the Rectors of Oldbury for 250 years. In 1538-9, Sir Roland Gosnyll (or Gosnell) was appointed Rector by Katerine Blount, Widow, and Walter Blount, grantees of Salop Abbey. In 1555, Gosnell was appointed Vicar of Tenbury, but apparently did not vacate Oldbury, for although in 1556 John Gryse was appointed to Oldbury by Robert Poynes, grantee of Salop Abbey, Gosnyll appears to have held the Living till 1560, when he was deprived of Oldbury at the Visitation of the Diocese by Queen Elizabeth's Commissioners. (Two years later the Commissioners deprived him of Tenbury.) In that same year (1560) Richard Sherer was appointed to Oldbury by Humfrey Butler, grantee of Salop Abbey. It does not appear what had become of John Gryse. In 1580, the patronage finally passed into the hands of the Crown. The entry " 1597. Consionator W.V." after the name of James Burton may indicate that he received a preacher's license at the Visitation of Bishop Westfaling (Bishop of Hereford from 1586 to 1603). James Cressett Rector from 1641 to 1649, when he was appointed to Cound is the only recorded instance of a Rector of Oldbury leaving the Parish for another Living. Towards the close of the Civil War, in 1646, when the Puritans were in power, Shropshire was divided into Classical Presbyteries. Oldbury was one of the 39 Parishes that formed the Third Classis. James Jephcott (inducted August 14 1648) was a Presbyterian, and was one of the fifty-seven Shropshire Ministers who in the same year signed the declaration against Toleration. Jephcott was Head Master of the Bridgnorth Grammar School, and probably held Oldbury with his mastership. It appears to have belonged to a scholastic family, as Calamy mentions a Jonathan Jephcott who was also a Schoolmaster, and held the Living of Swaffham. There was also a John Jephcott, who was Master of Evesham School. Hugh (or Hugo) Stackhouse, (Rector from 1728 to 1743) was a scholar of some eminence, who founded the Stackhouse Library in Bridgnorth. He had held the Living of St. Mary Magdalene's, Bridgnorth, since 1726, and continued to hold the two Livings jointly till his death. He was also Master of Bridgnorth Grammar School. Thomas Littleton (Rector from 1743 to 1793) had held the Living of St. Leonard's, Bridgnorth, for ten years before his appointment to Oldbury, and continued to hold the two Livings jointly till his death. Thomas Moses Lyster (1793-1821) was a younger son of the ancient Shropshire family of Lyster of Rowton Castle, whose father represented the County in Parliament until his death. Mr. Lyster held the Livings of Billingsley and Neenton as well as that of Oldbury. He lived at Oldbury, and " with the consent of his diocesan, he at a very considerable expense, added, embellished, and improved the old lowly habitation of the Rectors of Oldbury. which he made a most desirable residence, without laying any part of the charge upon the future Incumbent." (Obituary notice in the Gentleman's Magazine, May, 1821.) He was a County Magistrate and "a scholar of great reading." About the appointment of his successor, Mr. Thomas Dethick (1822-1834) a curious story is told. A Mr. Cox was Rector of St.

vi. OLDBURY REGISTERS.

Leonard's, Bridgnorth, at the time of Mr. Lyster's death. He had the reputation of being a Methodist,- a name which indicated religious zeal rather than any special party views. Mr. Dethick, a man of less energetic type, was Rector of St. Mary's. It was said that people attended St. Leonard's on Sunday morning to be stirred up, and St. Mary's in the afternoon to be soothed. When the Living of Oldbury became vacant, each of the two Bridgnorth Rectors desired to obtain this additional preferment. Mr. Cox went up to London on the outside of the coach, and had to change his clothes, before calling on the Lord Chancellor to ask for the Living. Mr. Dethick, being inside the same coach, no change of clothes was necessary in his case. He called on the Lord Chancellor at once, obtained a promise of the Living and, as he came out of the Lord Chancellor's house, met Mr. Cox coming in on the same errand. Such is the story, but as Mr. Dethick was not instituted until 13 months after the death of Mr. Lyster, its truth must be regarded as very doubtful. That such a story should have been circulated and believed is not without its significance as to the state of the Church at the time. It would seem that Mr. Dethick continued to live in Bridgnorth until the last few years of his life, when his handwriting shews that he must have become very feeble, the Curate, John Fearnall, inhabiting Oldbury Rectory. John Parton (1834-1883) belonged to an old Shropshire family, some members of which had lived in the Parish since about 1684. He further enlarged the Rectory and as has already been mentioned, almost entirely rebuilt the Church. He was a Prebendary of Hereford and Rural Dean of Stottesden. The present Rector, John Preston Wright, was appointed in 1883, and in 1905 became Rural Dean of Bridgnorth. In his time, the Church was re-seated and panelled in oak, and carved oak pulpit, Clergy desks and Lectern erected in memory of the late Rector.

There are wall tablets within the Church to the Rev. Joseph and Mrs. Woolley and to the Rev. Thomas and Mrs. Dethick, and one on the outside wall of the chancel to the Rev. T. M. Lyster.

The patronage of the Rectory was vested in the Abbot and Convent of Shrewsbury from the first foundation of the Church until the dissolution of the Abbey. In 1538, Katherine Blount, widow, and Hill Blount, presented, in 1554, Robert Poynes, gent., and in 1560, Humfrey Butler,- all as grantees of Shrewsbury Abbey. In 1580, the patronage passed into the hands of the Crown, and since that time the Crown has presented to the Living.

The Church Goods return of Chalices and Bells, made 2 June, 1553, has this entry:-

" OLDBURY. Three bells of accord', a chalice of sylver wt a patent p'cell gilt."

The Religious Census of the Province of Canterbury made in 1676, shows that there were then in Oldbury (in Stottesden Deanery) 56 conformists, and no papists or nonconformists. All those were " inhabitants above the ago of 16.' The population of Oldbury would probably be at that time about 120.

The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, contains the following account of these Registers:-" Oldbury R. No. 1, Bap., Bur., 1583-1812; Mar., 1583-1753. No. 2, Marr., 1754-1812."

The first register is contained in a parchment-covered volume with flap, measuring 14½ inches by 7. It is evidently made up of several volumes of different sizes bound together. The first seven leaves are of paper, with a watermark containing the letters G.R. These leaves are the full size of the volume. Six of these seven leaves are blank; one, the fourth in order, has some entries of miscellaneous matters of the years 1737 to 1803. Then follow fourteen leaves of parchment, the full width of the book, but only 10 inches high, the height of the page being made up by fourteen small leaves of paper, all blank, with the exception of one on which there is a recent entry. The entries on the fourteen parchment leaves date from 1582 to 1677 (inclusive). Three inches at the bottom of the tenth leaf have been cut out, and the entries at the top of the further side of the leaf have been scratched out with a knife, thus leaving a gap between 1649 and 1663. Some of the fourteen short parchment leaves have been injured by damp, so that a very few of the entries on several of the pages are almost undecipherable. The entries for the year 1641, coming at the bottom of a page are entirely washed out. From the appearance of the page, it is not improbable that this was done intentionally. Following the fourteen short leaves, there is a very small leaf of thin parchment,

viii. OLDBURY REGISTERS.

much injured and defaced. Then follow five leaves of parchment 13¼ inches high and not quite the full width of the book. The first page of these five leaves is much defaced, the last is almost absolutely illegible. It is covered with writing in various hands and in all directions, crossed and re-crossed. The entries on these five leaves date from 1695 to 1698. The remainder of the book consists of twenty-eight leaves of parchment, the full size of the volume, and containing entries of births, deaths and marriages to the year 1812, interspersed among which are miscellaneous entries which come down to a more recent date. The earlier entries on these twenty-eight leaves overlap those of the preceding leaves, and contain entries for the missing years from 1695 to 1698.

The following unusual Christian names occur:- Male- Josephus, Crispian, Ichabod, Amram, Darias, Silvanus; Female- Ceciloe, Sisly, Ambrocia, Petranellah, Avis, Gwenthean, Elianor, Mellone, Grisagon alias Grisell. (This last name,- variously spelt, Grizell, Grizil, Grissell, and Grizald, appears with some frequency).

The first entry refers to the family of Oldbury, a name which is found variously spelt (and sometimes in the form " Westwood alias Oldbury ") throughout the Register until 1739. Among the Blakeway MSS. there is a portion of a pedigree of the Oldbury family (too confused and fragmentary to be of any use). After the name of Thomas Oldbury, who was buried at Quatford (?) in 1725, are these words,- " his family being upwards of 700 years standing in this Parish." If these words are to be understood literally, the Oldbury family must have been in the neighbourhood before the Norman Conquest. At the foot of the pedigree is this curious pencil note (undated):- " The fam. of Oldbury is of great antiquity; but all their ancient writings are lost thro' the following accident. The township of Erdington having a law suit at Shrewsbury (70 or 80 years)* all the writings in the Parish Chest of Quatford were taken there: on being produced in court, many of them written in the ancient hand, were found to have no relation to the cause; but the judge and counsel said they were of great consequence, being the property of a family of the name of Westwood alias Oldbury, and directed the man who brought them, one Phillips, to take them back with great care. But Phillips, either from malice or some unknown cause, destroyed them all."

The miscellaneous entries are of some interest. On p. 18, there is a curious entry about the custom of " Easter Drinking," dated " Easterday, Anno Dom., 1686." This entry has been made more difficult to read by having been inked over at some later date. The contraction which is printed in brackets looks like Yr, which would have no intelligible meaning. The conjectural emendation Qr might stand for a quarter of a hundred. It is in favour of this reading that the number 25 could be equally divided among the five signatories of the memorandum who admit their joint liability to provide materials for the feast. The word " phrayes," is puzzling, but it is probably only another form of Froise, which is defined in Nares' Glossary as " a sort of pancake with slices of bacon in it." The New English Dictionary gives the variant spellings Fraise and Frayse (which could be phonetically identical with Phrayes) with a reference to Miss Jackson's Shropshire Wordbook, 1879.

It only remains to add that the Registers were copied by Mr. T. R. Horton, and collated by Miss Auden, and the proofs compared with the original Registers, and seen through the press by the present Rector.
