The Registers of Shipton,
1538 to 1812.
SHIPTON being a donative in the gift of Robert Jasper More, Esq., M.P., the ancient parish registers are in his custody, and it is through his kindness and that of Mrs. Jasper More that the writer has been enabled to make the following transcript.
In the first part of this labour he has been preceded by Miss Rouse Boughton, who transcribed and translated the record down to the year 1648, and also appended an index up to that date, i.e., from 1538 to 1648.
It is to be regretted that the record, which begins even before Cromwell's injunction for the keeping of Parish Registers, is broken by two short gaps, viz., between 1644 and 1648 and between 1643 and 1656.
The volumes, however, are as a whole in good condition, the first, which covers the long period 1538 to 1648, being of parchment. It is, as far as 1604, a transcript made in that year from the old paperbook. Richard Churchman was the transcribing priest, and he signs nearly every page up to 1607, giving in 1605 also the names of the churchwardens, John Amies and John Tilley. After this no page is signed until 1631, when John Gough signed up to the date of his death in 1638. The cover of Vol. I is loose, but not seriously damaged.
Vol. II is exceedingly small, containing only 14 pages, measuring each about 10 inches by 5 inches, and enclosed in a slightly larger fragment of a deed of the three (?) and twentieth year of Queen Elizabeth. It is neatly written throughout, but damp has obliterated much of the contents of the last page.
Vol. III is much larger, and like the two that precede it is of parchment. Its legibility has, however, been impaired by its being clipped, as well as carelessly stitched into its cover. It has also been kept folded across, much to its detriment. Its shape doubtless suggested this treatment, as its length is about 16 inches and its present width 7 inches. The record begins, too, on the outside of the cover, and damp has played havoc with this and the two pages following to a serious extent. The changes in the handwriting have been noted where they are sufficiently obvious, which is not always the case. From 1704 onwards to the end of the volume each year (or sometimes each page) has usually been signed by the curate in charge, in writing which shows that he did not for the most part make the entries himself. The carelessness

which is evident in many entries, and the astonishing variety in the numbers of the yearly entries, make it probable that many baptisms and burials towards the end of the last century were never entered at all.
Vol. IV is another small parchment book, not much bigger than Vol. II. It is in good condition, and contains baptisms and burials only, from 1792 to 1810.
The marriages from 1757 to 1804, together with the records of banns, extend over 22 pages out of 40 in a fifth parchment volume, whose printed title-page is dated 1754. About one-half the volume remains blank. The notice in 1797 of banns having been published " on three succeeding Sundays," viz., on 24th September, 15th October, and 5th November, seems to show that at that time divine service was held in the ancient parish church only on every third Sunday.
The last marriage entry in the books kept by Mr. More is of 1804, or possibly 1807, for the figure is not clear. And the Rev. Robert E. Haymes, rector of Holdgate and curate in charge of Shipton, states that there are not any registers in the parish chest beginning before 1812. It seems, therefore, that a few years' marriage entries have been lost, or perhaps were never made at all. No help on this or other points is obtainable from the transcripts in the Diocesan Registry at Hereford.
