Sidbury.
Sidbury Registers.
SIDBURY is a parish 6 miles south-west of Bridgnorth, in the diocese of Hereford, and rural deanery and hundred of Stottesdon. Its area is 1,272 acres, and the population in 1891 was 73. In 1676 there were at Sidbury 63 ' Conformists ' above the age of 16, which shows there has been a considerable decrease in the population in 200 years. Charles Richard Estcourt Cresswell, Esq., is lord of the manor, and the patronage of the rectory is vested in Lord Barnard.
The Parish Resister Abstract, 1831, gives this account of the Sidbury registers:- " Sidbury R., No. I Register, 1731, 1735-1740, 1748-1804, 1806-1809, 1811-1812. No. II, Bap. 1811-1812. No. III, Marr. 1754-1812."
Fortunately, since 1831 an earlier register has been recovered, which extends from 1560 to 1717. This is an early eighteenth-century copy of the original register, and is written in a good engrossing hand, evidently by one person. It consists of 16 leaves of parchment, measuring 14 inches by 6 inches, in a parchment cover, and is in excellent condition and very legible. A few of the entries are in Latin. Unfortunately the entries from 1623 to 1658, which probably filled four leaves, are missing, and all entries after 1717. This lost register was found in a box at Middleton Scriven in 1852, and was restored to the parish.
The second volume is a small square book, 9 inches by 7½ inches, containing 15 parchment leaves in a parchment cover, which is lettered "Sidbury Register, 175-. On the flyleaf at the end of the book are seven entries. It extends from 1731 to 1811, and is in various handwritings, and mostly legible. Vol. III contains only seven entries for the years 1811 and 1812; it is a paper book in a brown leather cover, which is lettered " Christening Register," and measures 15 inches by 9½ inches. It contains forms to be filled up, stating when the child was "Born," " Christened," and " Registered."
Vol. IV contains 45 entries of marriages from 1754 to 1811. It is a paper book in the usual printed form, in a parchment cover lettered "Sidbury Register, 1754." Only 15 pages of this register are filled.
The principal families that occur in the register are those of Purslowe and Creswell, who are styled " esq.," as also is Scrope. The families of Hotchkis (formerly of Hawkswood), Smith, Wredenhall, Berkly, Winwood, Browne, Lowe, and Page are styled " gent." or " Mr." The entries relating to the families of Okely, Jenkin, Fosbrooke, and Broughton are also of interest. The patronage of the rectory has frequently changed hands. In 1689, the Earl of Shrewsbury was patron; in 1753, Edward Hale; in 1770, John Purcell; in 1819, Thomas Wood; in 1851, Walter Stubbs; in 1875, the Earl of Shrewsbury. By an Order in Council dated 12 December, 1874, the benefices of Sidbury and Billingsley were united, and have since been held together.

The Church, which is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is an Early English stone building, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch, and western bell-turret, and was restored in the year 1878. Its ancient font is figured in Eyton's Antiquities (vol. iii, p. 61).
At Domesday, Sudburie (i.e. South-borough) was held of Earl Roger de Montgomery by Ralph de Mortimer. A family who took their name from the place were Mortimer's tenants here. Before 1240 it came to Ralph d'Arraz, possibly through his wife Joan, and continued in his descendants, who also were lords of Neenton. The manor was afterwards long held by the Purslowe family. Rowland Purslow, in the seventeenth century, devised it to his half-sister Anne, the wife of Richard Cresswell, of Barnehurst, who was High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1670, and in whose descendants it has remained for upwards of 200 years.
The present transcript of the register was made by Mr. T. R. Horton, and has since been collated with the original registers by the Rev. W. G. D. Fletcher, F. S. A., who has also seen the proofs through the press. It is here printed by kind permission of the Rev. John Lewis Williams, the present rector.

Memorandum. That on the first day of December Ralph Woolley, Rector of
Sidbury, read the Common Prayer according to the use of the Church of
England ; And in the presence of the Congregation did testify & give his
unfeigned assent & consent thereunto in the form & words according to Law
in that case provided. Also on the said first day of December, he the said
Ralph Woolley, after the reading of the said Common Prayer, &c., in the
parish Church of Sidbury, did read the whole book of Articles, commonly
called the Articles of Religion, in the presence of the whole Congregation.

This Copy of the Old Register of the Parish of Sidbury was given to me in
the year 1852 by Dr. Rowley, then Rector of Middleton Scriven, and formerly
Curate of this Parish, who said it was found not long previous in his
house, in an old box, and that he had no recollection of having seen it
until it was so found. It is evidently a Copy of the Old Original Register,
and contained when delivered to me only sixteen leaves, or thirty-two
pages. I immediately, on seeing it, pointed out the deficiency of four
leaves between 1623 & 1659, and again another deficiency after 1717 at the
end, and have since endeavoured, but without success, to recover the lost
portions. Of the Original nothing is known. August 12, 1853.
