Weston under Red Castle Registers.
WESTON UNDER RED CASTLE is, with its member Wixhill, a township and chapelry of Hodnet, and some account of it has been given in the introduction to the Registers of Hodnet. In 1901 its population was 222, and its area 2,243 acres.
Weston is one of nine places of the name in Shropshire, and it lies three miles west of Hodnet, hence its name. In Saxon times it was held by Ethic Sylvaticus, and was worth 60s. per annum. At the Domesday Survey, Westune was held by Ranulf Peverel under Earl Roger de Montgomery. It was a manor of three hides, and there were eight serfs, three villains, one radman, and nine boors here. For some reason unknown the manor escheated to the Crown about 1168, and in 1175 Henry II. granted it together with Alveley, to Guy le Strange, then Sheriff of Shropshire. It passed to his son Ralph le Strange, who died in 1195, leaving his three sisters his co-heiresses. Their representatives sold the Rock of Radecliff and all their land in Weston to Henry de Audley, and Henry III. on 2nd May, 1227, confirmed the grant, and three months later empowered him to build (or fortify) the Castle of Radeclif. From this time the Red Castle became the Shropshire stronghold of the Audleys, and the manor of Weston was termed Weston-under-RedCastle. The Hundred-Roll of 1255 states that James de Alditheley holds the manor of Weston, which is 4 hides, and pays neither stretward nor motfee, nor does it any suit to County or Hundred; further, that he assized beer in his Liberty, imprisoned persons taken within his Warren, and accepted fees for his Advowry. The Audleys became possessed not only of Weston, but also of Whixall near Prees, Marchamley, Kinstone, Ightfield, Losford, Hawkstone, and Gravenhanger, all of which estates in the later fourteenth century Inquests of the Audleys were accounted merely members of the Red Castle. On the death of Nicholas, Lord Audley in 1391, the bulk of his estates passed to his sister's son, John Touchet, who bore the title of Lord Audley. But a third part came to the Fitzwarines. In 1545, King Henry VIII. granted the manor of the Red Castle to Sir Andrew Corbet, Knt. In 1600, Adolphus Cary and Anne his wife settled it upon Oliver, Lord St. John. The manor seems to have continued for some time in the Corbet family, whilst the Red Castle and the surrounding domain was purchased early in the 18th century by Sir Rowland Hill. Long before this the Red Castle was dismantled or suffered to fall into ruins. The Keep, which is 200 feet in height, is still standing, and a portion of another tower. The remains show that this stronghold of the Audleys must have been an almost impregnable fortress.
Hawkstone seems to have belonged to the Hills as far back as 1592, and according to some authorities was purchased in 1554. The mansion house is of red brick with stone facings, and occupies three sides of a quadrangle. The house was re-built or greatly enlarged, and the wings were added in the eighteenth century by the Right Honourable Richard Hill, an eminent diplomatist, for his nephew Sir Rowland Hill, Bart. The Hills of Hawkstone were a branch of the Hills of Court of Hill, in Burford Parish. General Hill, a great soldier, and for fourteen years Commander-in-Chief of the Army, was raised to the Peerage in 1814; he was born at Press in 1772, and died at Hardwick 10th December, 1842. The fourth Viscount Hill in 1906 sold the Hawkstone Estate, including Marchamley and Weston, to the Right Hon. George Whiteley, P.C., M.P., J.P., Patronage Secretary to the Treasury, who was on 3rd July, 1908, created Lord Marchamley of Hawkstone
Hawkstone Park and domain is singularly beautiful and full of picturesque scenery.
iv. WESTON UNDER RED CASTLE REGISTERS.
The Religious Census made in 1676 states that there were at Weston sub Red Castle 143 conformists, no papists, and no nonconformists. The whole population would then be about 290. In 1821 there were 58 houses in Weston, with 322 inhabitants. Near the chapel is a well-preserved pair of stocks, with two stone upright side-posts.
The Chapel of Weston is an edifice of red sandstone, and consists of nave and chancel, south porch, and western tower with pinnacles. Of the mediaeval chapel nothing remains. Eyton mentions several coats-of-arms as being in the chapel windows in the 16th or 17th century; and in the east window two kneeling figures, one of " Dns Johannes," and the other " Dna Isabella," each wearing a surcoat of arms. The lady's arms seem to be those of Fitz Warine (or perhaps Leighton). In 1790 a brief was issued for re-building the chapel. In 1791 the nave and western tower were built, chiefly at the cost of Sir Richard Hill, 2nd Bart. In 1879 the chancel and vestry on the south side, and the south porch, were erected, the gallery was removed, and other alterations were made. The font is octagonal, with quatrefoil panels. The Communion plate was given in 1838 by General Lord Hill. There is also an 18th century Communion cup, and a paten which may have been the cover of an earlier chalice. (See Cranage's Churches of Shropshire, II., 736). The Church Goods return of 1553 shows that there were then remaining in the chapel two small bells and one silver chalice. In 1740 there were two small bells and a sanctus bell, and in 1752 three bells. There is now one bell, cast by Thomas Mears, in 1842. The windows are in memory of the Rev. John Hill, who died 14th June, 1891, and Charlotte, his wife, who died 14th Jan., 1884; Rowland Clegg, 3rd Viscount Hill, died 30th March, 1895; Brian Hubert Hill, died 18th Dec., 1893; and Robert Gill, died 1st Jan., 1889. A mural tablet at the end of the nave is in memory of George Downward, who died 19th March, 1809, and Elizabeth, his wife, who died 19th Oct., 1827. The Chapel was licensed for marriages in 1905.

WESTON UNDER RED CASTLE REGISTERS. v.
The Parish Register Abstract of 1831 contains this account of the Weston Registers:- " Weston under Redcastle C. No. I., Bap., Bur., 1565-1725; Marr., 1574-1725. No. II., Bap., Bur., Marr., 1725-1753, Bap. continued, 1754-1812, interrupted by No. III., Bur., 1726-1812. Since 1753, Marr. have been solemnized at Hodnet, the Mother Church."
Vol. I. is a parchment book of 30 leaves, 14 inches by 6 inches, in a parchment cover, and extends from 1565 to 1725. The front cover, the paper flyleaves, and the first nine leaves of the Register are decayed through damp. The earlier part was copied by William Hyll, curate in 1616, from a paper book written by Humfrey Fletcher, a former curate. It is all in English, except two entries in 1695, which are in Latin. The Churchwardens' names are generally given. A good deal is in the parish clerk's illiterate handwriting. Samuel Orpe, curate, wrote it from 1671 to 1682; and in 1693 William Handley, parish clerk, makes a new heading, and keeps the Register.
Vol. II. is a parchment volume, interleaved with paper, in a brown leather cover, 15 inches by 84 inches. It contains marriages from 1725 to 1753, and baptisms from 1725 to 1812. All the marriages, and the baptisms from 1725 to 1775, are on smaller paper leaves, 12 inches by 8 inches, inserted at the beginning of the Register. The remaining baptisms 1776 to 1812, fill only nine leaves of the book. The earlier part is in an illiterate hand; after 1742 it is well written. The volume also contains population statistics in and 1821, a Seat Roll dated 1792, and a Terrier. On the cover is written:

Vol. III. is a paper book 15 inches by 10 inches, in a parchment cover; and it contains burials from 1726 to 1812. The burials from 1726 to 1783 are on smaller paper leaves, 12 inches by 8 inches, inserted in the book. The burials 1784 to 1812 fill only four leaves of the book. All the remaining leaves are blank. Outside the cover is this:- " No. 3. The Register of Burials in the Chapelry of Weston under Red-Castle in the Parish of Hodnet, and the County of Salop."
The principal family that is named in these volumes is that of Hill, styled " Bart." and " Esq." Other families styled " esq." or " Mr." are those of Downward, Dicken, and Collier.
It only remains to add that the Register was transcribed by Mr. T.R. Horton , and was collated with the original Register by the Rev. W.G.D. Fletcher, F.S.A., who also has seen the proof-sheets through the press. It is now printed with the kind permission of the Rev. J.A. Sharrock, the present Rector of Hodnet.

Memorandum.-In the former part of the last, or 18th century the Register Books of this Chapelry have been much neglected, and contain some irregular & incorrect Entries, which were probably written by some ignorant Persons. It is to be hoped the Minister & Ch: Wardens for the time being, will in future avoid such a neglect & inattention to a public Record.

The above Seat Roll was made according to the Value, Rent, or Assessment, &c., of the different tenements in the said Chapelry of Weston, on Sep. 29, 1792, by the Minister & Chapel Wardens.
As Sir Richard Hill, Bt., hath been the chief & most generous benefactor towards defraying the expence of rebuilding Weston Chapel, it is thought but reasonable & respectful that he & his family & domestics should be first & sufficiently accommodated with the most commodious & convenient Seats on the ground floor, and in the Gallery of Weston Chapel; and that they may at any time exchange them for any Other seats, which Sir Richard Hill may hereafter choose in their room.

A TERRIER of the Chapelry of Weston under Red Castle in the Parish of Hodnet & County of Salop, of all Tithes due to the Rector.
All Tithes are paid in kind: There is a Modus, or Prescription for the
tithe of Hay, Hemp & Flax throughout the Parish. The Small Tithes are paid
in the manner following:- One barren cow 1d. One Cow & Calf 1 1/2d. Four
Cows & Calves 6d. Five Cows & Calves 2/6. Seven Cows & Calves 5s. Ten Cows
& Calves 5s., & so on in proportion. Five paying half of One; & 7 or 10 a
whole one; & under five three half pence a piece.
Wool is collected in kind either by the number of the Fleeces; half a
fleece at 5; a whole one at 10, or 7; or else by the weight, one pound at
7 or 10, half a pound at 5. Lambs are collected in kind: Half a Lamb at 5;
a whole one at 7 or 10; the owner taking up two, & the Rector the 3rd
Lamb.
Young Geese at 7 or 10. Pigs be it the first or any other. Bees put down &
killed 2d. a Cell. 1d. offering money. A Married Couple 4d., a single
person all above the age of 16, 2d. a piece. Garden 1d. Smoke 1d. Herbage
5 Groats. Mortuary 10s.
The publishing of Banns 1s. Marriage by Banns 2/6. Burials 1s. Churching
