PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR THE
SHROPSHIRE PARISH REGISTER SOCIETY.
1914.

Note for the Reader.

The present is the seventh volume of the Registers of the Diocese of St. Asaph which has been completed by the Shropshire Parish Register Society. It contains the seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth volumes of the voluminous Registers of Oswestry. This Register is now completed to the year 1812, and as printed is more complete than the original Register, thanks to the kindness of Archdeacon Thomas in supplying a number of missing entries from the Bishop's Transcripts preserved at St. Asaph.

In this, as in previous volumes, the entries are printed in abstract form, all mere verbiage being omitted, although every fact is recorded, and all items, other than the usual entries of Baptisms Marriages and Burials, being printed in full. For the abbreviations adopted, reference must be made to the " Notes to the Reader " at the beginning of the earlier volumes.

For the transcript of the present Volume our thanks are due to Miss Rachel Leighton, who has also collated the transcript with the original Registers, and has passed the proofs through the press. To her is due in large measure the bringing out of the entire Oswestry Register to 1812.

In this Volume there is a noticeable absence of "ap" names, so frequent in the first and second Volumes, and the names will be found indexed under the surnames throughout, save in the case of a few Welsh names, where they are indexed under the first Christian name. The "ap" names are not indexed in the same way in the several Volumes; and before searching them, the Notes to the Reader and the Introductions to each Volume should be consulted.

Thanks are due to the late and present Vicars of Oswestry or leave to print the Register, and for facilities afforded in transcription and collation, and to Archdeacon Thomas for much help afforded throughout the issue of the entire Register.
