Bedstone Registers.
BEDSTONE is a small parish lying between Clungunford and Bucknell, in the hundred of Purslow, rural deanery of Clun, arch-deaconry of Ludlow, and diocese of Hereford. Its area is 754 acres. In 1891 the population was 162, whilst in 1901 it was 137.
At the Domesday Survey Betietetune was a manor of two hides, and was held by Picot de Say under Earl Roger de Montgomery, the sub-tenant being Fulco. From Fulco it passed to the family of Jay, who continued lords of the manor and patrons of the rectory until the reign of Henry VII., when it came by descent to the Irelands of Albrighton. It afterwards came to the Bennett family, and was purchased in 1879 by Sir Henry William Ripley, 1st Bart., in whose family it is still vested.
The Parish Register Abstract of 1837 gives this account of the Registers:- "Bedstone R. No. I., Bap., Bur., 1719-1768; Mar., 1719-1755. No. II., Bap., Bur., 1769-1812. No. III., Mar., 1756-1810".
This is substantially acurate. The first volume measures 12 inches by 7, and contains 11 parchment leaves. The second volume measures 14 inches by 8, and contains to parchment leaves. The third volume is the usual printed Register of Banns and Marriages, of which only 6 leaves are filled. The earlier Registers have long since been lost.
The Church of St. Mary is a very old foundation. It was anciently a Free Chapel, in the gift of the lord of the manor. The present building consists of chancel, spire, and western bell-turret surmounted by a shingled spire. The walls are Norman, and there is Norman work visible in the round-headed windows in the north wall of the chancel and south wall of the nave, and in the semicircular chancel-arch with its plain chamfered impost. The bowl of the font is probably of the late Norman period, though it stands on a new base. The west wall of the church has been partially rebuilt, and now ends in buttresses. The church underwent "restoration" in 1851, and again in 1879.
In 1291 the rectory was valued at £2 per annum. In 1534 it was estimated at £4 per annum, and in 1662 at £4 135. 4d. In 1676 there were 53 Conformists in the parish of Bedstone, no Papists and no Nonconformists.
The patronage of the rectory seems to have passed from the Irelands to the Sneades, about the middle of the eighteenth century, and from them to the Browns, Mrs. J.H. Brown being the present patron.
