BUILDWAS is a parish, township, and village, pleasantly situated on the banks of the river Severn, 3 1/2 miles north from Much Wenlock and 11 miles south-east from Shrewsbury, in the hundred of South Bradford, rural deanery of Wrockwardine, archdeaconry of Salop. and diocese of Lichfield. It comprises one township of Great and Little Buildwas, which are separated by the river. The old stone bridge, with one large central arch. and two small arches on either side, was swept away by a flood in 1795, and the following year a new iron bridge of one arch designed by Telford was erected by the Coalbrookdale Co. at the cost of £6,000. This in its turn was replaced by a new cast-iron bridge, erected by the County Council in 1905-6. As early as 1318 the Abbot of Buildwas had a grant of Pontage, or toll on the bridge at Buildwas, for three years; and in 1355 his successor had a grant of Pontage. to enable him to restore Buildwas bridge, which had been broken down.
The area of the parish is 2,181 acres. Its population has remained stationary during the last century: 258 in 1801, 240 in 1831, 273 in 1841, 259 in 1891, and 294 at the last census in 1911. The Rev. John W. Fletcher of Madeley has left on record an account of an extraordinary phenomenon which occurred at a place called the Birches, near Buildwas, 27th May, 1775, when some 23 acres of land on the north bank of the river slipped bodily down the hill side; the bridge between Madeley and Buildwas, and the turnpike road, were swept away, and the Severn made a new channel. It lies below the old Buildwas Inn (now the Bridge Farm), and has since been known as " The Slip."
Buildwas derives its name from the Saxon words beild or belde (a shelter). and was (water), and surrounded as it is on three sides by hills and on the fourth by the river its name is appropriate.
GREAT BUILDWAS was probably originally in Cound parish, and lies on the south side of the Severn. In the time of Edward the Confessor, and also at Domesday, the manor of Beldewes belonged to the Bishop of Chester (or Lichfield), and was worth forty-five shillings. It was a manor of one hide. 1n the demesne were two ploughs, and three villains with the Provost had three ploughs. There were five serfs, and a mill, and woodland for 200 swine.
Roger de Clinton was consecrated Bishop in 1129, and in 1135 he is said to have founded Buildwas Abbey, as an affiliation of the Cisterian Abbey of Savigny, and he endowed it with the manor of Buildwas. King Stephen confirmed this grant. The Abbey was dedicated to St. Mary and St. Chad. It was endowed by Philip de Belmeis, William Fitz Alan, and other benefactors with the vills of Ruckley, Little Buildwas, Cosford, Leighton, Wentnor, Hope Bowdler, Stirchley. &c. At the Dissolution in 1535-6, the temporalities amounted to £142 145.; and there was an Abbot (Stephen Grene) who resigned on a pension of £16, and seven monks. The Abbey ruins are extensive and well preserved, and the older portions date from the 12th century. The fine Norman arcades of the Church are intact, and its presbytery nearly perfect. iv. THE REGISTER OF
LITTLE BUILDWAS, which lies on the north side of the Severn, was a member of the distant manor and church of Wroxeter. William Fitz Alan, lord of Wroxeter, who died in 1160, gave " the vill which is called Parva Buldewas " to Buildwas Abbey, probably soon after its foundation; and his son William Fitz Alan confirmed his father's grant. From this time Little Buildwas ceased to have any connection with Wroxeter. Alan Berenger (or de Bildwas) had held the manor under the Fitz Alans, and now became a Vassal of Buildwas Abbey. His son and grandson, both named Alan, suceeded; and held Little Buildwas on this tenure, " that he shall ride with the Abbot anywhere in England, at the Abbot's will and charges." The third Alan 1eft a daughter Alice, who married Edmund de Lenham. In 1302-3, Edmund and Alice granted the manor to the Abbot and Convent of Buildwass under whom they held it.
In 1327 the following inhabitants of Parva Buldewas were assessed to the Subsidy:- Emericus le Walcar' xijd. Richard Maudepas ixd. John le Chestershyr' ijs. iiijd. Richard son of John xd. Walter le Spencer viijd. The two latter were subtaxers for this and the neighbouring villages.
Little Buildwas continued the possession of the Abbey until the dissolution in 1335-6. (See Eyton's Antiquities, VII., 320-325.)
King Henry VIII. granted the site and precinct of Buildwas Abbey, together with Great and Little Buildwas, and the possessions of the Abbey in Shropshire, Staffordshire, and Derbyshire, on July 4th, 1537, to Edward Grey, 3rd Lord Powis, who died here, and was buried at Pontesbury, 9th July, 1551. He entailed Buildwas, by deed dated 31st March, 1546, on his illegitimate son (by Jane Orwell) Edward Grey, esq., who resided there. He married Grisogona, daughter of John Gifford of Chillington, and had issue five sons, the eldest of whom, Edward Grey, inherited Buildwas, and had livery of it in 1597. [1]
In 1609 Edward Grey, esq., had licence to alienate the site of Buildwas monastery to Thomas Harris, junior, serjeant-at- law. In 1612 Sir Robert Vernon and John Curzon, esq.. conveyed Buildwas to Thomas Chamberleyne; and the same year Thomas Harrys and Edward Grey confirmed the grant to Chamberleyne. In 1617 Thomas Chamberleyne. then a serjeant-at-law, sold Buildwas to Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Ellesmere. His son, John Egerton. Earl of Bridgewater, on 4th September, 1648, conveyed Buildwas to Sir William Acton, knight and baronet, a merchant of London. He was a younger brother of Sir Edward Acton, 1st baronet of Aldenham. Sir William Acton died in March, 1650-51, having previously made a settlement of his estates, on himself in tail male, with remainder to his daughter Dame Elizabeth Whitmore and her sons, and an ultimate remainder to William Acton, a younger son of Sir Edward Acton of Aldenham, and his heirs. In 1698 the estate passed to William Acton's only child Jane, who had married Walter Moseley, esq., of The Mere, Staffordshire (he died in 1712), and Buildwas has ever since remained in the family of Moseley. His descendant Walter Moseley, esq., served the office of Sheriff in 1833. The latter's grandson, Major Herbert Richard Moseley, is lord of the manor of Buildwas and sole landowner.
Buildwas Abbey, the dower house of the Moseleys, is built on the site of the Abbot's House, and contains the Abbot's Chapel, a thirteenth century hall, and other portions of the monastic buildings. It is of grey stone, and has been carefully restored. It was occupied as a farmhouse until 1864, when the Abbey Grange Farm was built for the tenant. It contains an Elizabethan ceiling, ornamented with fleurs-de-lis, hearts,

and other designs, similar to ceilings preserved at Wilderhope, Belswardine, Plaish, and elsewhere. The Moseleys had resided at the Mere in Staffordshire from about 1500. They sold this estate when they remoyed to Buildwas; and occupied Buildwas Park, from about 1830.
Buildwas Park is a modern mansion, built about the year 1830 by Mr. Walter Moseley on the site of an ancient house known as the West Coppice, and is in the Elizabethan style of architecture. West Coppice was the residence of the Lacons, an illegitimate branch of the Lacons of Willey. It was purchased (probably about 1610) from Edward Grey, grandson of Edward Lord Powis, by Lancelot Lacon, who is called in the Lacon pedigree drawn up in 1547 and preserved at Kinlet "bastard sonne to Edward Lacon." the second son of Sir Thomas Lacon of Willey by his wife Mary, daughter of Sir Richard Corbet of Moreton Corbet. Lancelot's son Silvanus married Grace, widow of Francis Homage of Belswardine and daughter of Edward Littleton. Their son James Lacon, who was aged 20 at the Visitation of 1623, is described as of West Coppice, and was buried at Leighton (or at Buildwas) in June, 1667. He was succeeded by John, who died in 1676; and he by another John Lacon " of ye West Coppice," who was buried at Sheinton in 1716. Richard Lacon, esq., of ye West Coppice was buried at Sheinton in November, 1718; and his burial is the latest entry of this family. There are about 20 entries relating to the Lacons of West Coppice in the Registers of Buildwas, Leighton, and Sheinton. One of James Lacon's daughters, Anne, left a bequest in 1700 to the poor of these three parishes. Samuel Edwards, about 1720, purchased West Coppice from the Lacons; and on his death it was bought by Walter Acton Moseley, esq.. in the year 1746. The Smithemans were for some time tenants of this property. John Smitheman served the office of Sheriff in 1761, and resided here until his death in 1809, and his widow Margaret until her death in February, 1818. The present tenant is Lieut.-Colonel Harold W.A.F. Crichton-Browne. Buildwas Park contains about 150 acres, and in the grounds is a fine avenue of yew trees. It is properly the seat of the Moseleys. although the family now reside at the Abbey.
The Bridge Farm is in part a timber famed structure of the Elizabethan period, and contains some good oak panelling, believed to have been brought from the Abbey after the dissolution. The Court Baron of the manor was usually held here, until as lately as 1799.
Lawley's Cross, which stood where the road from Buildwas to Wenlock crosses the boundary between the lands of these two monasteries, was from very early times a Sanctuary for law-breakers.
Buildwas during the Civil War was garrisoned as a blockhouse for the King. Local tradition says that it was bombarded by the Parliamentarians from the Beeches (or Brook's Hill), which is half a mile to the south-west. Perfect occurrences, August 20-27, 1645, mentions Buildwas as one of the 20 garrisons taken by the Shropshire Committee from the King. Dugdale's Diary states that " a party of Horse of the Rebells from Wemm, past Bildwas Bridge (under pretence of being the King's forces) surprized Sir Thomas Eyton at his own house, and in their returne tooke away the guard at the same bridge." A number of iron cannon balls have from time to time been dug up in the precincts of the Abbey.
THE CHURCH, situate in Little Buildwas, and dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was originally a chapelry of Wroxeter. It was probably founded by the monks of Buildwas, who annexed to it the parochial cure of the manor of Great Buildwas. Its Incumbents are entered on the Diocesan Registers of Lichfield from 1298 until 1350, after which they were no longer instituted by the Bishops of Lichfield, and the Church of Little Buildwas became a Peculiar, and so continued to the last century.
vi. THE REGISTER OF
The old church was taken down in 1720. Dr. Cranage says, it was probably a small and poor building and nothing is left of it. The new church then rebuilt consists of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western turret partly-timbered containing three bells. The chancel was rebuilt in modern Gothic style in 1864, with a vestry on the north side, in memory of Captain Herbert Henry Moseley. The nave was new-roofed in 1877, and in 1884 the old oak pews were converted into open sittings. The pulpit is of Jacobean date; the font is modern. The return of plate and bells, 2 June. 1553, is as follows: " Byldwas. Oone chaleys of sylver wythe a pattent gilt, wythe oone smale bell." In 1740, there were two bells. These were recast by Mears in 1846, and a new bell was added in 1847, " the gift of Walter Moseley, Esqr. and the Revd. John Bartlett."
The present plate consists of two chalices, two patens, and an alms dish inscribed:- " The gift of Acton and Walter Acton Moseley to Buildewas Church 1746."
Over the porch on a stone is this inscription:- " This Church was Rebuilt Ano: Dom: 1720, Acton Moseley Esq. Lord of the Manour, John Warham Minister, Humphr: Wheeler and Geo: Hulett Wardens."

The Charities comprise a sum of annually. left in 1700 by Ann Lacon, the daughter of James Lacon of West Coppice, and charged on her estates in Much Wenlock (as also a like sum left to Leighton and Sheinton). She was the friend and companion of the Countess of Bradford in 1682, and is mentioned in the letters of Lady Russell. Mrs. Margaret Edwardes left 109 Consols, and Mrs. Pritchard of Broseley 100, t0 be invested for the benefit of the poor of Buildwas.
The patronage of the Perpetual Curacy was in the Abbey of Buildwas until its dissolution; John, Earl of Bridgewater, presented in 1635; and during the last 200 years it has been in the Moseley family. From the time of the Dissolution Buildwas was a Peculiar or Donative, and exempt from the Bishop's Jurisdiction. It had also a Peculiar Court for proving Wills and granting Letters of Administration. This was abolished by Act of Parliament in 1857, and the records were transferred to the Shrewsbury District Registry. The Buildwas Wills only commence in 1799; five were surrendered on 5 March, 1860.
Leland and other authorities have recorded that Aldulf, Bishop of Lichfield, mortified at the degradation of his see from an archbishopric, by the Council of Cloveshoo in 803, retired to Buildwas, and spent the remainder of his life there as a hermit.
The village School was built by Walter Moseley. esq., in 1856.

Volume I., which extends from 1665 to 1795, marriages to 1754 only, is a paper book of 32 leaves in a parchment cover, size 16 by 6 inches. It is in fair condition, though some of the edges are torn, and is generally well written, but in some places by an illiterate hand. There are no entries from 1716 to 1720. when the Register recommenced " from the time of rebuilding the Church, Trinity Sunday, 1720." In 1679 and onwards are some entries of burials in woollen. The most important families named in the Register are those of Lacon (styled Esquire), Smitheman, Myvart, Dancer, Shuttleworth, Wheeler, Haslehurst, and Boukley, who are mostly styled " gentleman " or " Mr."
x. THE REGISTER OF
Volume II. is a parchment book containing 26 leaves in a vellum cover, 8 1/2 by 6 inches, and is in good condition. It contains marriages from 1754 to 1792, but no special entries. Outside is written: " No. 2. Buildwas Mar: Register. 1754." There are 102 marriages in these 38 years, of which 30 were in the last four years.
Volume III. is a paper book, in a stiff parchment coyer. 15 by 9 1/2 inches. It contains 289 entries of Banns and Marriages from 1792 to 1812, on the usual printed forms. Outside is written: " 1792. Buildwas Marriage Register, No. 3." During Mr. Gilpin's 1ncumbency, the number of marriages celebrated at Buildwas gradually increased; there were 35 in 1802, and 46 in 1803. For some reason unknown, perhaps because it was a donative, and Incumbents were not instituted by the Bishop, Buildwas became a sort of Shropshire " Gretna Green," where marriages were readily performed.
Volume IV. contains Baptisms and Burials from 1796 to 1812. It is a parchment book of 56 leayes, in a stiff vellum cover, 15 by 9 1/2 inches, but only 3 leaves at the beginning have been used for Christenings. and 3 leaves at the end for Burials. The Volume is in very good condition. At the beginning are some memoranda, containing a copy of a return made in 1831, as to the Registers; and some notes as to the presentations of the Revd. Joshua Gilpin and the Revd. John Bartlett to the Incumbency. These are printed on pages 54 and 55.
Volume V. (lettered " No. 4.") contains 300 marriages from 1813 to May, 1819. It is one of the King's Printers' Registers, three printed forms on each page, a paper book in a vellum cover, size 15 1/2 by 10 inches. Of the 300 marriages, no less than 299 were celebrated by John Turner, Curate; the remaining one (No. 143, that between Edward Harley and Mary Roe, on 1 January, 1817), being taken by " John Turner, Curate, Junior." The Volume is paginated 1 to 100, and the entries are numbered 1 to 300. In every case the Curate has added " with consent of parents," or " of friends," and sometimes " of parents and friends," - evidently forgetting that this column was intended for minors only. The parties are all described as " of this parish," and all the marriages were by Banns, so there were evidently great facilities at Buildwas for weddings. I think that these marriages were mostly of people of the poorer classes, as in 245 out of the 300 entries one or other of the parties, usually both of them, signed with a mark, and the handwriting of those who wrote their names is illiterate. In most cases the witnesses bore the same surname as one of the parties, the Parish Clerk William Wood signed but rarely, so the marriages were not strictly clandestine. The number of marriages was 62 in 1817, and 65 in 1818.
Volume VI. is a similar book, and contains marriage entries numbered 301 to 600, of which only 116 are filled up, and it is paginated 101 to 200. There is no Title Page. outside is written " No. 5." John Turner signs the Register to 13 September, 1820 (No. 388), his last entry. The words " with consent of friends," &c., are not written after October, 1819, save in the case of minors. There were 66 marriages in 1819, and 53 in the first nine months of 1820. After Mr. Turner left the Curacy, the very numerous marriages ceased. There were none in 1821, three in 1822, one in 1823, two in 1824, none again in 1825, and after this they are quite proportionate to the size of the parish. John Bartlett celebrated nearly all the marriages from 1822 to 1837. He signs himself as " official" from 1822 to 1828, as " Minister and official " in 1829, and as " Minister " from 1830 to 1837.

I have thought it desirable to print these 416 marriages between 1813 and 1837, as they are very numerous; and they are now all in print down to the time when the Government registration of marriages commenced.

It remains only to say that Volumes I. to IV. were copied by the Rev. Alfred Bonney, and Volumes V. and VI. by the Rev. W. G.D. Fletcher, who has collated the whole of the transcripts with the original Registers, and seen them through the press. very torn and decayed condition, from 1659 to 1796 - the entries before
1655 being only 5, & appearing to have been occasional or from recollection,
& the Marriages from Feb. 20th 1792 having been transcribed into a new
Register No. 3, as those from 1755 to 1792 had ben also entered in No. 2.
