Diocese of Lichfield.
W.G.D. FLETCHER, M.A., F.S.A.
PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR THE
SHROPSHIRE PARISH REGISTER SOCIETY.
Note for the Reader.
The present volume, which is the fourteenth volume of the Registers of the Diocese of Lichfield, contains the Registers of Leighton, Atcham, Buildwas, and Berrington.
The Registers are not printed in full, but, as in all previous volumes issued by the Society, in an abbreviated form which can readily be understood. Every salient fact has been recorded and all remarkable events noted in the Registers have been given in full. A list of the abbreviations adopted will be found in the "Note for the Reader," printed in many of the earlier volumes.
In the case of three of these parishes, the Marriage Register has been printed to the end of 1837. This is very important, and should always be done, as it is the only record of these Marriages. Government Registration began on 1 January, 1838.
A capital letter after " of " or " p " denotes the parish whose Register is dealt with; thus " of L."=" of Leighton," and " p. parish of Atcham."
Thanks are due to the Incumbents for permission to print their Registers, and for the facilities afforded in their transcription and collation. Also to Miss Auden, Miss Hughes, Mr. T. R. Horton, and to the Revds. C. H. Drinkwater and W. G. D. Fletcher, for transcribing and collating. The work of the late Mr. William Phillips and Rev. Alfred Bonney, in copying Atcham and Buildwas, must also be remembered. For the cost of printing Leighton, Atcham and Buildwas, we are indebted to the generosity of the late Mrs. Seymour.
For some account of the story of Parish Registers generally reference should be made to the Note for the Reader prefixed to the Register of St. Chad's, Shrewsbury.
