Clive
Vol. I.

Clive Register.

Clive was anciently a chapelry, in the parish of St. Mary's, Shrewsbury, consisting of the townships of Clive and Sansaw. It is situate about seven miles north of Shrewsbury, and is in the hundred of Brimstree, rural deanery of Wem, archdeaconry of Salop, and diocese of Lichfield. Its area is 1,200 acres, and the population in 1901 was 415. Clive and Sansaw were both from an early period in the Liberties of Shrewsbury.

At Domesday, Burtune was a manor divided between the Shrewsbury churches of St. Mary and St. Chad; the St. Mary's portion being equivalent to the modern Clive and Sansaw, and the St. Chad's portion to the modern Broughton and Yorton. In St. Mary's Fee there were five geldable hides; one priest had half a team, and seven villans had two teams and a half, and there might be there three teams more; there was wood for feeding twenty-four swine, and the estate was worth fifteen shillings. In 1255, the Dean and Canons of St. Mary's held four geldable hides in Clive, and it was the King's almoign to his chapel of Salop. In 1279, the Dean and Canons are stated to hold Clive and Sansall in frank-almoign of the King. and the men of Clive and Sansall to hold in free socage under the said Canons. Amongst the most important families connected with Clive and Sansaw, were those of Russel, Gery, Wycherley, and Gardner. William Wycherley, the dramatist, was born at Clive Hall, about 1640. The Clive Hall estate passed from the Wycherleys in 1752, to their relatives, Nehemiah Huffa and Elizabeth Cadman, and from them to Robert Embrey, at whose decease it was sold to Charles Harding, and it is now the property of Thomas Meares, Esq. The Sansaw estate was purchased by John Gardner, in 1622, and it remained with his descendants until 1883, when it was sold to James Jenkinson Bibby, Esq.. of Hardwicke Grange, and is now the property of his son, Frank Bibby, Esq. Mr. Percy Wright Thorniley, of Shooter's Hill House, also owns land in this parish.

There was a chapel at Clive, probably as early as Domesday. The old church of All Saints, consisted of a nave, without transepts or separate chancel. It was partially restored in 1849, and completely restored in 1885, whilst the tower and spire were added in 1892. The building contains exquisite modern wood-work, carved by the best English carvers. On the dissolution of the College of St. Mary, King Edward VI. endowed the Free Grammar School in Shrewsbury with the tithes of Sansaw and Clive, lately belonging to the dissolved College. The patronage of the curacy was formerly vested in the Mayor and Corporation of Shrewsbury, and more recently in the Governing Body of Shrewsbury School, who sold it to the late James Jenkinson Bibby, Esq., in whose family it is still vested.

The following is a list of the Incumbents of Clive, so far as they can be ascertained:-

1578. Thomas Newnes, also Incumbent of Broughton.
1594. Thomas Yvans.
1636. William Sugar, also Curate of Grinshill and Broughton; buried at Broughton, 17 March, 1675.

Some further particulars about Clive and Sansaw may be found in the Shropshire Archaeological Society's Transactions, Second Series. vols. ii., 333, and ix., 179; and in Eyton,s Antiquities, vol. x., 160.

The Parish Register Abstract of 1837, contains this account of the Clive Register:- "Clive C. One Book Bap. Bur. 1611-1812, transcribed from old Register until 1718. Marriages not solemnized at this Chapel."

This account is not strictly accurate, as the earliest entry is in 1667, and there are a few marriages in the earlier part of the volume, the latest apparently being in the year 1738. The Register is a paper book containing 70 leayes, 13 of which are blank, in a vellum cover. marked "B.,' 12 1/2 inches long and 8 inches wide, and is in excellent condition. The book was bought in the year 1718, and from 1671 to 1718 is a copy of the original Register (not now preserved), written in a bold and plain hand, on one side of the leaf only. On 30 Nov., 1718, another handwriting begins. In 1723, the handwriting is that of Samuel Betton, who continues till 10 Dec.. 1746. On 5 Jan., 1746-7, the handwriting is that of William Bagley. who continues until 2 Dec., 1781. The writing from 1783 to 1812 is John Rowland's. At the other end of the Register are Churchwardens' Accounts for the years 1629 to 1642, and 1654; also some Burials in Woollen and Affidavits, 1679. There are also an agreement about seats, dated 23 Aug., 1657, and a plan of the chapel; a Terrier. dated 1784; a map of lands at Aston, purchased for the living, and answers to queries; notes of augmentations in 1806, 1810, and 1820; a license to John Rowland to register entries of burials, baptisms, etc., 1 Oct., 1783; a certificate of exemption from Land Tax, 16 Dec., 1814; and some memoranda in the handwriting of the Rev. J. Cooper Wood, as to the income of the living. 31 July, 1883, and as to setting up the topstone and cross on 20 Aug., 1894.

CLIVE REGISTER. V

The Transcripts of the Clive Registers. were returned to St. Mary's, Shrewsbury, and, with those of Albrighton and Astley, are preserved at that Church. They commence in the year 1708, and extend to 1754, from which year there is a gap of 45 years. They re-commence in 1799, and end in 1804. The Transcript for 1722 is missing; and that for 1720 is inserted out of place, between those for the years 1728 and 1729. From 1708 to 1723, the Transcripts are in various handwritings, some illiterate, and the surnames are sometimes illiterately spelt. From 1724 to 1746, they are in the bold and neat handwriting of Samuel Betton; from 1746 to 1755, in that of William Bagley; and from 1801 to 1805, in the writing of John Rowland. They are mostly signed by the Minister and Churchwardens of Clive. There are some variations between the entries in the Transcripts and those in the Register. In the earlier years, the entries in the Transcripts are sometimes abbreviated. In 1709, the Register has 12 entries, and the Transcript only 4, three of which are not entered in the Register at all. In 1710-11 there are only six entries in the Transcripts, as against 27 in the Register. Part of the year 1752 is given in duplicate in the Transcripts. For the purpose of eyidence, the Transcripts from 1708 to 30 Nov., 1718, are more valuable than the Register for the same period, the latter being to that date only a copy of the original Register.

The most important families named in the Register are those of Wycherley and Gardner. Daniel Wycherley, father of the dramatist, was buried at Clive, 7 May, 1697; and Bethia, his mother, on 10 May, 1700. Other old Clive families that occur in the Register, are those of Spendelove, Oare, Huffa, Groom, Newnes, Baugh, Maddox, Russel, and Embrey. Edward LLoyd, of Leaton Knolls, was married here in 1713, to Susannah Scarlett, of Worthen.

The present copy of the Register was made by the Rev. J.E. Auden. M.A., Vicar of Tong. The proof-sheets as they passed through the press have been collated with the original Register by the Rev. W.G.D. Fletcher, who has also collated the same with the Transcripts, all important variations in the latter being given in parentheses. The thanks of the Society are due to the Rev. Prebendary Newdigate Poyntz, M.A., Vicar and Official of St. Mary's. Shrewsbury, for his kindness in lending the Transcripts for the purpose of collation; and to the Rev. Edward Alexander Godson, M.A.. Vicar of the Clive, for permitting the Register to be printed.

CLIVE & SANSAW.

Whereas there are certain differences concerning the seats and pewes in
the Chappel of Clive as of late they have been alloted and appointed,
and chiefly excepted against by Mr. Daniel Wycherley the younger.
Therefore for the deciding & final determining thereof, we whose names
are subscribed do hereby declare that the pulpit and pew may be remov'd
into that seat where Mr. Gardner now sits, being the upper seat on the
south side, and that seat where the pulpit now is to be made for the
said Mr. Gardner as large as that wherein he now sitteth; An I likewise
we think fit that the said Mr. Gardner in satisfaction & 1ecompense of
three seats alledged to be assigned to him in the upper seat on the
north side of the Chappel, in the chancel, & also of one seat alledged
to belong to Mr. Gardner in the first pew on the south side in the
chancel, to allow unto Mr. Gardner the whole third pew from the door on
the north side for his servants. And we do also agree and think fit
that for the satisfaction and content of the said Mr. Wycherley that he
shall have the whole pew on the south side next to the Minister's pew
and pulpit, and also 1etain the two seats or pews on the north side in
the Chancel; He, the said Mr. Wycherley giving Thomas Hayward
satisfaction for his two seats in one of the said pews, for the better
enabling the said Mr. Wycherley so to do, he bath liberty to dispose
the seat that the said Mr. Gardner bath in the said pew upon the right
hand or south side in the chancel to the said Thos. Hayward. In witness
whereof we have hereunto put our hands the

[A. Plan follows of "LANDS in the TOWNSHIP of ASTON purchased by the

ANSWERS TO THE QUERIES.

1 The Estate lies in the Parish of Wem & is about two miles distant
from the Chapel of Clive.

2 The Estate is Freehold & subject to the Paymt. of no outgoings.

3 The Estate consists of three Fields called Barkers Green Crofts, one
Field containing 1 a. 1 r. 20 p., another 1 a. 0 r. 26 p., & the third
3 a. 1 r. 4 p., and all adjoining each other.

4 The Lands are Meadow & Arable; at this Moment the 1st is a Meadow, &
the other two are ploughed.

5 The Estate is now under Lease let to a Relatn. of the Landlord, & has been so for years, but the Tenant may be removed at Lady Day twelvemonth. The present Rent is [blank], but when the present Tenant is removed the yearly value of the Land will be much greater.

52 Shropshire Parish Registers. [

6 The usual annual Rent for Lands in the Neighborhood of the Estate of
the like Sort & Quantity to the Acre is from about 25s. to 30s. an
Acre, and of this value do we to the best of our judgment believe the
Land in Question to be worth.

7 27 to 30 years purchase is usually given for Freehold Lands of a
similar Quality in the Neighbourhood. For Copyhold not more than
[blank].

8 A good substantial Tenant & one wholly disinterested in the Sale of
the Estate is willing to give Eight Pounds a year clear of all Rates &
Taxes.

9 The Rates or Taxes payable for the Estate are the Poor's Rate about
[blank] yearly, paid by the Tenant & Land Tax by the Landlord.

10 The Gates & Fences on the Estate are in good repair but the Land is
but indifferently managed.

11 Mr. [blank] Lee of Wem is the Vendor of the Estate. The sum he asks
for it is £200, and which we in our judgement believe the Estate to be
well worth.

Sept. 1806. A further Augmentation to the Chapel of Clive by the
Governors of the Bounty of Queen Anne (viz.) £200.
J. ROWLAND, Curate.

Nov. 22, 1810. Upon the Revd. John Rowland announcing his wish to
resign the Curacy of Clive at Christmas, the Corporation of Shrewsbury
were pleased on this Day to nominate the Revd. Laurence Gardner, M.A.,
of Sansaw, to that Appointment.

1820. Laid out the above mentioned sum of200 in the Purchase of 6 a. 0
r. 2 p. of Land at Barker's Green in the Township of Aston and Parish
of Wem; which I have let to Mr. Price of the Wear in the Neighbourhood
of the Land for nine pounds a year. He to commence Tenant at Lady Day
next. L. GARDNER.

Transcript for 1801 calls the chapelry "St Mary's on the Cliff in the
Liberties of Shrewsbury;" whilst that for 1804, the last Transcript,
calls it "All Saints on the Clive." The Transcripts from 1799 to 1804
are signed by John Rowland, who three times is described as "Minister,"
and twice as "Curate" of Clive.

The names of the Churchwardens for 1629, 1637 to 1642, and 1654, are
given above in the Register.
