Grinshill Registers.
GRINSHILL is a village 7 miles from Shrewsbury, and 4 from Wem. It lies off the high road under the shelter of Grinshill Hill, the stone of which has been quarried for building from time immemorial. In 1327 twelve inhabitants were assessed for the subsidy for Edward III's wars with France, most of whom seem to have been prosperous, though none were especially wealthy; and in 1676 it possessed 70 inhabitants over the age of 16, among whom were no Nonconformists nor Roman Catholics. The population in 1891 was 334.
The parish extends over 830 acres. There is a deed in the Haughmond Cartulary of 15 Edward III (1341), relating to the road "from the wood of Brochurst by that of Shirwode to that of Acton Reyner", which gives the boundaries of the "vill of Grileshull". "First, the boundary begins at Hardwick Mill pool on the south, & extends by the water ditch as far as the road that leads to Grileshull, & from that road as far as the gate of Smaleheth, & from that place as far as le Ker, & from there as far as Geristy & Hawiscros, & as far as Pinchesbrook, & from that place as far as the heathend, & as far as Birchehill, & so to the gate of Okeley, & so to the first place where it began". The enquiry went to show that the road was commonly used for waggons and laden horses, but that the bailiffs of the lords of Acton and Grileshull had caused all persons carrying wood, stones, or salt to be attacked, and made them pay for use of the way.
This list of boundaries is commented on by Richard Gough in his history of Middle (p. 17), who wrote that in his time (1701) only four of the places mentioned could be identified.
The deed was cited in a lawsuit at the beginning of the seventeenth century between Sir Humphrey Lee, of Langley, the impropriator of the tithes of Grinshill, and the Rector of Middle, Ralph Kinaston. Sir Humphrey claimed that part of Hardwick was in Grinshill parish, and not in that of Middle. The matter was settled by arbitration in 1609, so Gough was told by Mrs. Aletha Clifford, of Lea Hall, mother of Ralph Cleaton, the impropriator of Grinshill in 1701, then a minor.
Richard Gough was connected by marriage with the Wood family of Muckleton, and he speaks of one of the "antient family" of Newnes of Grinshill as his cousin. He was at school at Broughton under Mr. Sugar, and mentions many neighbours who were among his schoolfellows.
iv GRINSHILL REGISTERS.
In Saxon times Grivelesul, as the Domesday Book calls it in 1086, was held by four Saxon franklins - Leuiet, Godric, Seward, and Alger. After the Conquest it passed to Earl Roger de Montgomery, and was held under him by a tenant, Wakheline, who also held Faintree near Bridgnorth. The manor consisted in 1086 of two hides, on which were two teams, and there were three free tenants who paid a rent of 7s. per annum. These latter may possibly have been three of the former Saxon owners, though perhaps it is not probable. The overlordship of the manor went later to the Fitz-Alans, and Grinshill was held under them partly by the family of De Orleton, and partly by the Lords of Stanton on Hine Heath. Adam de Orleton and Ralph his son parted with their property here to the Canons of Haughmond, and that Abbey held three-fourths of the manor till its dissolution. The remaining quarter was held by the Actons of Acton Reynald under the Stantons. In 1292, Sir Reyner de Acton parted with Acton Reynald and the fourth part of Grinshill to Sir Philip Burnell, and they were inherited by Philip's sister Petronilla, the wife of William de Ercall (IV) and mother of the fifth William de Ercall. The Burnell share of Grinshill seems, in common with their other estates, to have descended to Francis, Lord Lovel, who was attainted under Henry VII, and his manor of Acton Reynald granted to one of the Dudleys. In 1637 Sir Andrew Corbet held the manor of Grinshill, and it has remained with the Corbets to the present day.
The Canons of Haughmond held their Manor Court at Hardwick, and counted Grinshill as a member of it. After the Dissolution their property passed through several hands to those of Richard Tyler, whose eldest daughter, Dorothy, took Hardwick Grange with its belongings in Grinshill and elsewhere to her husband, Thomas Whitcombe, of Berwick Mavison. The families of Kilvert, Embrey, and Wood have been landowners in Grinshill for many generations. In 1617 William Killvert and Robert Emerie sold the land to Shrewsbury School on which the house (now known as the Grange) was built as a country house for the masters and boys of the Schools to retire to in case of plague or sickness in the town.
The Church of Grinshill was originally one of the chapels of Shawbury (Acton Reynald, Morton Corbet, and Great Withyford were the others), and passed with the mother church to the Canons of Haughmond. Bishop Roger de Clinton (1130-1148) mentions that he had himself consecrated the chapels and cemeteries at three of the four chapelries, but not at Grinshill, thus dating the Church there as before 1130. The possession of a cemetery was an important feature, as it gave independent status.
The present Church was built, with the exception of the west wall, in 1839-40, the south wall being on the old foundations. It is dedicated to All Saints. The Vicarage House was built in 1878. A small vicarage house seems once to have existed nearer the Church, but that and the tithe barn have now disappeared.
There is no list of early incumbents extant. The first whose name we possess is Sir Thomas Newnys, clerke, in 1577 also rector of Broughton and curate of the Clive, who on May 23, 1553, presented to Edward VI's commissioners the list of church goods remaining in his hands thus:- "Sir

This chalice and paten have now made way for a paten given by Mrs. Eyton in 1639, a chalice given by Mrs. Judith Corbet, 1776, and a flagon given in 1880.
In 1602 Thomas Pea, who had "no degree" and was "no preacher", was parson of Grinshill; and Thomas Newnys was curate of Broughton and of the Clive.

vi GRINSHILL REGISTERS.
In the latter part of the sixteenth century Sir Humphrey Lee, of Langley and Lea Hall, held the tithes of Grinshill, and they passed to Ralph Gaston by marriage with Rachel, grand-daughter of Sir Humphrey, the heiress of Lea Hall, near Pimhill. The Cleatons were a Roman Catholic family. Their estates passed in the eighteenth century to two heiresses - Alathea, wife of James Apperley, and Jane, wife of Watkin Williams Wynne, of Voelas.
In 1761 and 1786 Watkin Wynne was patron of the benefice; in 1804 John Wood, of Harcourt Park, with whose family it still remains.
The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, gives this account of the Grinshill Registers:- "Grinshill R. Nos. I, II, Bap., Bur., Marr., 1592-1759. Nos III, IV, 1760-1812. No. V, Marr., 1757-1811". As a matter of fact there are only three volumes, not five.
The earliest register book is a copy made in 1718 of the original register beginning in 1592, which now no longer exists. It is in very good condition, and well kept. The register is continued to 1759 in the same volume.
The second volume contains entries from 1759 to 1812, the marriages only to 1756. The third volume, which is the ordinary printed form of marriage register, contains entries of marriages from 1757 to 1811.
The principal families named in the register are those of Biked, Wycherley, Embrey, and Wood.
A history of Grinshill, by the late Rev. J. R Blakeway, has been printed in the Shropshire Archaeological Society's Transactions, Second Series, vol. iii, pp. 343-362.
The register was transcribed by Miss Amy M. Auden, who has also passed the proof-sheets through the press, and it is now printed by the kind permission of the Rev. John Wright, the present vicar of Grinshill.
