SHROPSHIRE PARISH REGISTERS.

Diocese of Hereford.
VOL. X.

HONORARY SECRETARY:
W.G.D. FLETCHER, M.A., F.S.A.

PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR THE
SHROPSHIRE PARISH REGISTER SOCIETY.
1907.

Note for the Reader.

The tenth volume of the Registers of the Diocese of Hereford, now completed, consists of the long and important Register of Claverley. It is a particularly interesting Register, not only on account of the extensive parish and families connected with it, but because it has been compared and corrected with the original Parish Register, and also with the original transcripts which were formerly sent in to the Peculiar Court of the Deanery of Bridgnorth.

For the transcript and the careful collation the Society is indebted to Lieutenant-Colonel G. S. Parry, of Eastbourne, who has also most generously defrayed half the cost of printing the Register and Index.

The Register is, as has been the plan adopted throughout, printed in abstract form, and the following abbreviations have been used :-

a.-aged. gent.-gentleman.
aff.-affidavit. inf.-infant.
b.-bachelor. lic.-license.
b.-born. mar.-married.
bap.-baptised. s.-son.
C.-Claverley. sp.-spinster.
co.-county. w.-wife.
d.-daughter. wid.-widow.
dioc.-diocese. widr.-widower.
esq.-esquire. wit.-witnesses.

It might be noted that in 1667 an Act was passed in the interest of the woollen trade, ordering all bodies to be buried in woollen under a penalty of 50s., and in 1678 a second Act directed that an affidavit should be made within eight days of the burial. After this date in the Register, the word " Aff." (affidavit) will be found affixed to entries of burials. The word " pauper " does not necessarily imply poverty, but that the duty imposed by Act of Parliament on registering births, deaths, and marriages, was not paid.
