PARISH REGISTERS.

Diocese of Hereford.
VOL. V.

HONORARY SECRETARY:
W.G.D. FLETCHER, M.A., F.S.A.

PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR THE
SHROPSHIRE PARISH REGISTER SOCIETY.
1909.

Note for the Reader.

The fifth volume of the Registers of the Diocese of Hereford, now completed, contains the Registers of Bromfield, Greete, Bedstone, Middleton Scriven, Deuxhill and Glazeley, Habberley, Cardeston, and Ratlinghope.

In the present volume, as has been the rule adopted by the Council throughout, the Registers are not printed in full, but in an abbreviated form which can readily be understood, though every salient fact has been recorded, and all occurrences, remarkable events, etc., have been given in full.

The following abbreviations have been adopted:-

aft. - affidavit.lic. - license.
b. - bachelor (or born).mar. - married.
bap. - baptized.nup. - nupti.
chr. - christened.p. (or par.) - parish.
ch. w. - churchwardens.s. - son.
cler. - clericus.sep. - sepultus.
clk. - clerk.sp. - spinster.
co. - county.ux. - uxor.
d. - daughter.vid. - vidua.
dioc. - diocese.w. - wife.
esq. - esquire.wid. - widow.
f. - filius (or filia).widr. - widower.
gen. (or gent.) - gentl man.wit. (or W.) - witnesses.

A capital letter after "of" or "p." denotes the parish whose particular Register is dealt with; thus "of B."="of Bromfield", and "p. G."="parish of Greete".

The value of the Greete and Cardeston Registers is increased by the addition of the Transcripts of the earlier lost Registers from the bundles preserved at Hereford.

Thanks are due to the incumbents of the several parishes for leave to print the Registers, and for facilities afforded in their transcription and collation. Also to the Revds. W.G. Clark-Maxwell and F.C. Norton, Miss Hope-Edwardes, Mrs. Rowan Robinson, Miss Auden, and Mr. T.R. Horton, for transcribing and collating. Also to the Earl of Plymouth (President of the Society), Colonel Hope-Edwardes, Mrs. Seymour, and Mr. W. M.H. Hulton Harrop, for generously defraying the cost of printing Bromfield, Greete, Cardeston, and Ratlinghope respectively; and to Mrs. Baldwyn Childe for the transcripts of the lost Cardeston Register.

It might be well to point out that these printed volumes are not legal evidence of any baptism, marriage, or burial; but for entering up a pedigree in the College of Arms, or for any legal purpose, certified extracts must be obtained from the incumbents. The statutory cost of each certified entry is 3s. 7d.
