SHROPSHIRE PARISH REGISTERS.
Diocese of Hereford.
VOL. IX.

HONORARY SECRETARY:
W.G.D. FLETCHER, M.A., F.S.A.

PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR THE
SHROPSHIRE PARISH REGISTER SOCIETY.
1909.

Note for the Reader.

The ninth volume of the Registers of the Diocese of Hereford, now completed, contains the Registers of Cleobury Mortimer and Hopton Wafers.

In the present volume, as has been the rule adopted by the Council throughout, the Registers are not printed in full, but in an abbreviated form which can readily be understood, though every salient fact has been recorded, and all occurrences, remarkable events, etc., have been given in full. The following abbreviations have been adopted:-

b. ... bachelor.sep. ... sepultus (buried).
sp. ... spinster.s. ... son.
wid. ... widow.d. ... daughter.
widr. ... widower.w. ... wife.
p. ... parish.lic. ... license.
wit. ... witnesses.gent. ... gentleman.
bap. ... baptized.esq. ... esquire.
chr. ... christened.clk. ... clerk.
mar. ... married.co. ... county.
bur. ... buried.dioc. ... diocese.
ch.w. ... churchwardens.f. ... filius or filia (son or daughter).
ux. ... uxor (wife).

A capital letter after "of" or "p." denotes the parish whose particular Register is dealt with; thus "of C.M."= "of Cleobury Mortimer," and "p. H.W."="parish of Hopton Wafers."

The Transcripts of an earlier lost Register of Hopton Wafers from the bundles preserved at Hereford, add very much to the value of this volume.

Thanks are due to the incumbenfs of the parishes for leave to print the Registers, and for facilities afforded in their transcription and collation. Also to Mrs. Baldwyn Childe and the Rev. Prebendary James Payton for transcribing and collating these two Registers respectively.

It might be well to point out that these printed volumes are not legal evidence of any baptism, marriage, or burial; but for entering up a pedigree in the College of Arms, or for any legal purpose, certified extracts must be obtained from the incumbents. The statutory cost of each certified entry is 3s. 7d.
