The Parish Register Abstract of 1831 has the following entry:- " Hordley P.C., Nos. I., II., Bap. Bur., 1686-1812. Marr., 1686-1811." These are the two volumes which now exist. In the first all entries are mixed together till July, 1724, and from that time the marriages to 1754 and the baptisms and burials to 1756, are each entered separately, the whole being in MS. In the 2nd volume the marriages from 1754 to 1811 are entered on printed forms, and the baptisms and burials from 1756 and 1757 respectively to the end of 1812 are separately entered in MS. Occasionally different dates are given for the " baptism " and" christening "; in this case " christening," which is always the later date, would mean receiving into the church after a private baptism. George Morris' MSS. in the Shrewsbury Free Library contain a few extracts from a Register which began in 1653, and was lost before 1831; and the present abstract begins with a copy of these extracts, which refer to the principal inhabitants of the Parish. The Kynastons were patrons of the Living from 1530 to 1860, and have been Lords of the Manor from about 1460 to the present time. Their residence was at Hordley Hall, close to the Church, till about 1712 or 1713, when John Kynaston built Hardwick Hall, which has ever since been the residence of the family. Many of them have been Sheriffs of Shropshire. There is a history of the family in the Transactions of the Shropshire Archaeological Society for 1894, 2nd series, vol. VI., p. 209. The oldest entries in the registers as to families which still occupy land in the Parish are those of Reynolds, which occurs in 1669, and Cureton in 1721.
The Parish consists of the two townships of Hordley and Bagley. Domesday Book tells us that under Edward the Confessor there were two separate manors in Hordley, but they were waste; and that at the end of William the Conqueror's reign they had been united into one, which was held by Odo under Earl Roger, and was then flourishing. It was occupied by ten peasants (5 " villeins " and 5 " bordarii ") with two ploughs, and there was land enough for three ploughs, besides a wood which would fatten 60 swine. The rent paid to the Lord was 15s. Odo granted the Manor to Shrewsbury Abbey, which granted it to one Einion, but he and his descendants, though they acknowledged the Abbey as their feudal Lord, paid it apparently no rent.
The Church was built, as usual, adjoining the Manor House, which was occupied by the Lords of the Manor till about 1712, when Hardwick Hall was built, and Hordley Hall converted into the two present farm houses adjoining the Church.
The first mention of Hordley Church is in 1233, when there was a lawsuit between the Abbey and Kenwric, son of Einion, as to the advowson, which was eventually, in 1236, surrendered by Kenwric to the Abbey, and thenceforth the incumbents were all with one exception presented by the Abbey till 1530, when the Kynaston family, who were Lords of the Manor, had become the patrons. In the Institutions, the Incumbent is called Rector, but the benefice is styled a Chapelry or Free Chapel, which properly means a non-curative Chapel with no rights of baptism or burial (see Eyton's Glossary, under " Chapels " and " Churches.") No doubt this was originally the condition of Hordley. Eyton thinks it was a dependancy of Baschurch, and

this is perhaps indicated by the fact that in the tithe commutation award £16 was allotted to the Vicar of Baschurch. But Hordley acquired and has long had full parochial independence. It was not separately assessed to the Ecclesiastica Taxatio of 1291; it was valued in Henry VIII's " King's Book " at £3 19s. 2d., and for the purposes of Queen Anne's Bounty at £49. In the Diocesan Calendar of 1908 it is valued at £248. The differences in these sums are due partly to a real increase in the value of the living, but largely also to a great decrease in the value of money. The dedication of the Church is to St. Mary. The architecture is described by Mr. Cranage in his Architectural account of the Churches of Shropshire, where he says that the Norman doorway, now built up, in the North wall, fixes the date at probably the 3rd quarter of the 12th Century. In 1879 and 1880 much work was done. A new porch and vestry were added, and at the expense of Earl Brownlow the Church was entirely re-roofed and the belfry re-built. Two stone mullioned windows were re-placed, one at the west end, the other at the north side, two buttresses were built on the north side, and the east wall was entirely re-built, and a new decorated window inserted, and in the interior a new reredos, desk, lectern, and sedilia, were provided. An account of the whole is to be found in the Parish Magazine for those years. The glass in the East and North windows is by Powell, the former in memory of Mrs. Moore, wife of the Rector, who died 1st August, 1886, the latter in memory of Rev. W.C.E. Kynaston, of Hardwick, who died 8th October, 1903. An interesting bible and prayer book in the Church, of 1717 and 1721, are mentioned by Mr. Cranage.
The monuments in the Church are all to the Kynaston and Cureton families, and none are dated earlier than 1783.
The bells are described in Shropshire Archaeological Transactions for 1907, p. 9. One of them has the extraordinary inscription " Sancta Trinitas ora pro nobis "; the other is dated 1663. The certificate to the Privy Council from the Justices of the Peace for Salop, 2nd June, 7, Edw. VI, of the plate and bells in the Churches and Chapels in Shropshire, includes " Hordley, a chalic of sylv., 2 belles." The bell with the Sancta Trinitas inscription is one of these pre- Reformation bells.
Some indication of the state of education in the Parish is given by the fact that of 150 persons married, 82 signed by their mark. The present School was built in 1844 on land given by Sir J. Kynaston.
The following list of Incumbents is taken chiefly from the Revd. J.B. Blakeway's MSS. in the Bodleian, which consist of extracts made by him from the Episcopal Registers; but some additions have been made as to the 17th and later centuries from the Book of Institutions in the Record Office and other modern sources. Until 1530 the Patron was always the Abbot and Convent of Salop, except that in 1362 the Black Prince presented, by what right does not appear.

-1686. PHILIP VAUGHAN. As the burial of " Philip Vaughan, Rector," is recorded in Morris' Extracts from the old Register both on 26 May, 1656, and on 6 May, 1686, there must have been two Rectors of the same name, unless Morris has made some mistake. Burke's Royal Families, vol. ii, pedigree xcv, gives the descent of R. C. Vaughan of Burlton from Edward iii, in which Philip Vaughan, Rector of Hordley, who was buried there 26 May, 1686, is shown to have been son of Thomas ap John Vaughan, Eqre. of Plas Thomas, by Joan, daughter of Philip Jennings of Dudleston. He married Elizabeth Enser of Whittle, co. Salop, and was ancestor of the present Mr. Vaughan of Burlton. There is no mention of a previous Philip Vaughan, Rector of Hordley.
1686-1696. RICHARD ANDREWS, M.A., instituted 10 Sept., 1686. Patron, Edward Kynaston. He was admitted to Shrewsbury School in 1656. He was instituted to the living of Upton Magna 16 May, 1696, on the presentation of John Kynaston, and thereupon resigned Hordley.

EDWARD KYNASTON, B.D., inst. 4 Apr., 1803, patron, John Kynaston Powell, who was created a baronet in 1818 with remainder to his brother the Rector who succeeded to the title in 1822, and who was also King's Chaplain, Rector of Kinnerley till 1834, and Rector of Risby and Fornbam in Suffolk. The Registers of Hordley are always signed by his Curates, and seem to show that he hardly ever officiated here. He died 1839.
1839-1892. JOHN WALTER MOORE, M.A., Exeter Coll., Oxford, inst. 29 June, 1839, Patron, Thomas Parr (of Lythwood, Shropshire), who had bought the next presentation, did whose wife was sister to Mr. Moore's mother. An account of the restoration of the Church during Mr. Moore's incumbency has already been given. He also improved the living by buying two acres of land and building the present good Rectory House on it, with the assistance of a loan from Queen Anne's Bounty. The old Rectory House was the black and white building nearer the Church, now used as a farm house. Just before he resigned, the additional land now attached to the Rectory was acquired from the Hardwick property by exchange for glebe land elsewhere. In 1860 Mr. J. R. Kenyon, of Pradoe, bought the advowson from Sir J.R. Kynaston. Mr. Moore resigned in 1892, and died 17 Oct, 1894.

By his exertions the Mission Room at Bagley was built, in a situation much more convenient for the bulk of the population than the Parish Church. He was instituted to Hanmer 5 Oct., 1901.

EDWARD THORNES, 1723-1726. He was perhaps the Edward Thornes, who as son of Thomas Thornes, of Kinnerley, gent., matriculated at Jesus Coll., 2 June, 1720, aged 18. He would be very young to be Curate in 1723.
