The Register of
Leebotwood.

Leebotwood Registers.

Leebotwood is a village in the Hundred and Rural Deanery of Condover, and Diocese of Lichfield, 9 miles South from Shrewsbury and 4 from Church Stretton. Its population in 1891 was 156, and the acreage of the Parish 1,282 acres. In 1676, it possessed 105 inhabitants above the age of 16, of whom one was registered as a Nonconformist. This shows a larger population in the 17th century than Longnor, which now is the larger of the two. In 1086, "Botwood" was a small manor still held by its Saxon owner, but before the time of Henry II. it had been annexed to the Royal manor of Condover, and was regarded as Forest. About 1170, the king gave to Haughmond Abbey two tracts of land in Botwood, with land in Bechcote, and the pasture that had belonged to Bletherus the hermit. The Church of Lee Botwood may have been founded by this hermit, or the Canons of Haughmond may have built both this and the chapel once existing at Bechcote. Before 1182, Bishop Peche granted two charters confirming the Canons in their possession of the "Chapels of Lega and Bechcote", both within the Parish of St. Andrew of Condover. The second charter mentions that the consent of the Archdeacon of Salop and of all the then Portioners of Condover had been given to this appropriation, "And let the said Chapels be served as they are now, by one of the Canons of Haughmond, or by one Secular Chaplain, removable at the will of the Abbot, and who shall receive the Cure from the Abbot's hand so long as he shall there remain. And in the same Chapel of Lega let there be for ever a Baptistery and a right of Sepulture". This latter clause made Lee Botwood Church independent of Condover, and gave it its present status.

In 1320, the Abbot of Haughmond received the grant from King Edward II. of a weekly market to be held on Thursdays at Leye in Botewoode. The Canons retained their estates here till 1541-2, when they received a rental of £18 19s. 8 1/2d. from Leebotwood, 10s. of it being the rent of a messuage. The Church is not mentioned at that date, though the "Ferm of the Chapel of Bechcote" is accounted for as worth £1.

In 1546, the manor of Leebotwood is mentioned in the marriage settlement of Thomas Corbett, of Longnor, and Katherine Lee, of Langley, and in 1635, the rectory and parsonage of Leebotwood, and the free chapel of Longnor, were among the possessions of the Corbett family.

Possibly the mound between the Station and the Walk Mill was the site of the house of Auti, the Saxon Franklin who owned the half-hide which made up the Domesday manor of Botwood.

iv. LEEBOTWOOD REGISTERS.

In 1327, six inhabitants were assessed for the Subsidy for the wars in France. Two of them bore the name of Walker, and probably pursued their work of fulling cloth at the "Walk" Mill. All of the six were well-to-do, but not wealthy.

The Parish Register Abstract of 1837 has this account of the Leebotwood Registers:- "Leebotwood P.C. No. I., Bap., Bur., 1547-1812, Marr., 1574-1753. No. II., Marr., 1754-1812".

The first volume of the Leebotwood Register extends from 1548 to 1812. It is of paper, with a cover of boards. Some of the leaves are loose, but it appears to be perfect, all but a few lines of the first page, and is legible and in good condition throughout. There are 78 written leaves and some blank ones - the first 45 are written on one side only; the rest on both. The book is very long and narrow, 15 inches by 6. It records baptisms, burials, and weddings till 1775; afterwards, baptisms and burials only. The second volume is a Marriage Register extending from 1754 to 1812, on white vellum, size 15 inches by 9 1/2, and contains 62 entries. The earlier part, viz., till 1685, is a copy from an older book, taken 1685, and all in one handwriting. No signatures of clergy or churchwardens are given up to that date.

There are some lists at the end of the book, and some on loose pages, of inhabitants, communicants, &c. The earliest is 1691, and is a list of those who undertook so many yards each of the Churchyard. The families mentioned as Esq. or Mr. in the Registers are Corbett, Flint, and Plymley, Shallcrosse, Henaage, Jones, Browne, Dodd, Jeffreys, Blakeway, Colebarne, Ball. Several bequests to the poor from different members of the Corbett family are recorded in the Registers, and besides these the following people left money to the poor:- 1663, Frauncis Walker, of Clungunford; 1802, Lieutenant Beady; 1802, Joseph Plymley, Esqre.; 1804, Mr. Cornelius Whittaker.

There are some quaint entries in the older part: "John of the Parke", "The ould lone", "Margaret, ante to James Speed", &c.

In 1685, Sir Roger Harris, Bart., was buried at Leebotwood. He was the last baronet of the name. Boreatton, their estate, was sold after the Civil War to the Hunts, and Sir Roger seems to have retired to the neighbourhood from which his family originally came. They lived for generations at Wheathall in Condover parish.

Two breaks occur, one from 1631 to 1658, when a paper containing the entries for both Parishes during that period was burnt. This break is partly filled in by copying the baptisms recorded in family Bibles.

LEEBOTWOOD REGISTERS. v.

The second break, also affecting both Parishes, is from 1759 to 1777, apparently caused by the Curate's illness. This is also partially filled in on inserted leaves and loose slips of paper in many different hands.

The dedication of the Church is given in the "King's Book" as St. Mary, but the fact of the Wake being fomerly held in the autumn, as the old inhabitants remember, points rather to St. Michael. There is a rude carving of a dragon and a sword on one of the cross-beams. If the dedication to St. Mary is correct, the wake-day may have possibly been originally on "Lady Day in Harvest", i.e., August 15, the Assumption.

A terrier of 1698, signed by John Robins, Curate, and Richd. Jordan and Thos. Cartwright, Wardens, of Leebotwood, says:-

"We have no terrier house or glebe lands, but a church yard wh. is let for 2/6 p. ann. Our curate hath 8/10/0 p. ann, paid by the Impropriator, the Honble. Mrs. Anne Corbett, of Salop; each communicant pays the cur. 2d. p. ann., for every cow 1d., bees 1d., every colt 4d. [everything else in kind], as for the surplis fees our Curate hath 14d. for every wedding and 12d. for publishing the Banns of Maty., 4d. for the Churching each woman, takes nothing for the baptizing, 6d. a burying. Our Clerk hath 3d. a house. Our Curate is very well satisfied with what he hath, and we with him".

There is another in 1726 [still signed by John Robins] in which a wedding is 5/- lic., and 2/6 banns, a funeral 10d., "and if there be a sermon is usually 10/-".

The list of early Incumbents is necessarily incomplete, as, owing to the connection with Haughmond Abbey, they are not entered in the Lichfield Diocesan Registers.

The earliest Incumbent whose name is extant is Roger Luter, who made the presentment of the goods of his Church in 1552 to the Commissioners of Edward VI. Sir Thomas Butler, Vicar of Much Wenlock, mentions him as at Leebotwood in 1560.

You maye be pleasd to take notice that those that were
Regestered betweene 1631 and 1658 were put in a paper wich
Jhon Withington kept in his house in Lybottwood until the
house was burnt and liquise the Reigester paper. But those
that are written on the next side were Reigestered by there
friends in theire owne bookes and taken out of theire bookes

The above sayd Lewis Evanes had a sone borne between 2 & 3 a clock on Aug. 24, 1689, by his w. Kath. Evanes, whose name was Kath. Pursloe formerely. The name of the child is John.
Charles went away from his Brother in law the 19th of August, 1689, being Mundaye.
