Oswestry
Old Chapel Register.

CONGREGATION AND BUILDINGS.

It is not possible to give the exact date of the formation of this church. A Congregational Church was probably in existence in Sweeney township, some two miles from Oswestry, as early as 1651. Vestiges of the burial-ground are yet visible near the mansion of Sweeney, the residence of Stanley Leighton, Esq., M.P., F.S.A., who is a descendant of Thomas Baker, the then owner, who died 19 March 1675, and whose grave-stone is still there. Mr. Baker was a member of Parliament for Shropshire during the Commonwealth, and also High Sheriff.* By 1659 a meeting-house had been erected in Oswestry. By royal license, dated 25 July 1672, "a room, or rooms in the house of Hugh Edwards, at Oswestry, have been licensed as ' a place for the use of the persuasion commonly called Congregational"'. This was situated at the bottom of what is now called Arthur Street. The exact date of the building of the first chapel is not known. A " Deed for ye Seats in ye Chappel" is dated 1701. In 1748 "a Building and Malt Mill, lying in Oswestry, near the Castle Hill, and then, or late in the possession of John Evans," were purchased from " Richard Thomas, of Oswestry, gentleman," and a circular, appealing for funds to convert them into a chapel was issued "to the Ministers of Christ and all other Charitable and well disposed Christians, to whom these presents shall come". It was signed by the pastor, deacons, and leading members "in ye name of all ye rest "; and a recommendation was appended, signed by the Reverends Job Orton, Shrewsbury; Joseph Fownes, Shrewsbury; Ebenezer Keay, Whitchurch; Jen. Jenkins, and Joseph Baker. This chapel was opened for Divine worship in July 1750; it stood on the same site as the present. Old Chapel was converted into Sunday School rooms. In 1783 this chapel was enlarged; in 1794 a gallery was erected, and, in 1808, a further considerable addition was made. In 1830 it again became necessary to enlarge the chapel; so, with the exception of part of one wall, it was razed and rebuilt, and re-opened in April 1830, when the Rev. T. Raffles, D.D., preached one of the sermons. On the 7th September 1871 the memorial

* Congregational services were held at Mr. Baker's house at Sweeney, and in the garden are the grave-stones of Abigail, dau. of Sir Richard Chetwood, 1 May 1658; Jane, wife of Ambrose Moston, 26 July 1651; and Thomas Baker, Esq., 19 March 1675.- STANLEY LEIGHTON, 29 August 1900.

stone of the present building - henceforth called Christ Church - was laid, and the new edifice, erected at a cost of some £5,000, was opened on the 18th October 1872. The site, on an improved position, closely adjoins the Old Chapel. The church assumed the Independent or Congregational form of Government during the ministry of the Rev. Edward Williams, D.D., who also established a Sunday School, circa 1781.

COMMUNION PLATE.

Flagon: flat-lidded tankard flagon, with usual purchase and bold handle. Made at Chester, 1690-91; maker R.W.; name unknown. Mr. Wilfrid Cripps attaches especial interest to these marks.

Salver, large Paten on foot, edge of plate and foot gadrooned. Made in London, 1702-3. by John East, who entered his mark at Goldsmiths' Hall, in 1697. and was a maker of repute. He made some of the plate sent by Queen Anne as presents to churches in H.M. plantations in 1705, and other years.

Cup, porringer, with two handles and the usual diagonal fluted ornamentation of the period; made by Nathl. Lock, of London, 1709-10. The above-named plate was bequeathed by Mrs. Sarah Lloyd, of Oswestry, together with £200, in 1727, "for the use of the said Protestant Dissenting congregation, to be used at the Administration of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper thereof", and is thus described in her will:- " My largest silver caudle cup, and my largest silver tankard, and my largest silver salver." The coat of arms on tankard is that of Lloyd of Montgomeryshire, viz., (1) Sa. three nags' heads erased, two and one, or (Brockwel, Ysgythrog, - Prince of Powys). (2) Sa. a chevron between three owls, or (Broughton).

Two Silver Cups, temp. George III, probably acquired during the pastorate of Rev. Edward Williams, D.D., between 1784 and 1792.

One pewter paten.

All these articles were exhibited in the Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition, held at Shrewsbury in connection with the Church Congress, 1896; and at the Exhibition of Shropshire Antiquities, held at Shrewsbury in 1898, under the auspices of the Shropshire Archaeological Society.
