Preston Gobalds.
Preston Gobalds (or Gubbals) is situated on the road from Shrewsbury to Whitchurch, 4½ miles north from Shrewsbury, in the Hundred of Pymhill, the Archdeaconry of Salop, and the Diocese of Lichfield. The population in 1801 was 314; in 1841, 388; in 1881, 426; in 1931, 332. In a Diocesan Return of 1676 there were 133 Conformists, 9 Papists, and no Nonconformists.
The parish takes its distinctive name from Godbold the priest, one of the three "wise clerks " whom Earl Roger retained in his service as his advisers. He appears to have been a territorial magnate as well as an ecclesiastic, and held Prestone of the Church of S. Alkmund at the time of the survey.
With other possessions of S. Alkmund's this manor passed to Lilleshall Abbey, which was confirmed in its tenure by King John in 1199. In 1255 the Abbey held 4 hides here, and in 1279 the manor with its members was held of the King in chief. In 1343 the Abbot and Convent granted pannage in their wood here.
The Abbey retained its property here till the Dissolution.
In 1544 we have a Grant to Edward Hosyer in fee of all lands in Preston Gobalds and of all tithes in the township of Meriden and Le, being late parcel of the possessions of the Abbey of Lilleshall. In the same year Hosyer had license to alienate this property to Richard Trentham and others to his own use and to the use of his heirs, with remainders to Geoffrey and John his brothers.
Edward Hosier had a daughter and heir Elizabeth, who married John Draycott of Paynsley (Co. Staff.), and to them he conveyed in 1564 the manor of Preston Gobalds and lands there. Hosier died in or before 1571, and in 1578 John Draycott conveyed the manor and Rectory to Edward Basset and others to certain uses. Draycott died in 1607 seised of the manor of Preston Gobalds, his heir being his son John. This last-named John Draycott being a recusant, in 1609 John Peersall had a lease of the manor for 61 years.
John Draycott appears to have been in at least nominal possession of the manor as late as 1639, but soon after it had passed to the Lees of Langley and Lea Hall, who owned it during the Civil War, for in the Sequestration Papers of Sir Richard Lee mention is made among his estates of the manor of Preston Gobalds.
Sir Richard Lee died in 1660, when his estates were divided between his two daughters, Mary wife of Edward Smythe and Rachel wife of Ralph Clayton (or Cleaton), second son of Ralph Clayton of Oneley in Woore. The Preston Gobalds property went to Mrs. Clayton. In 1682 her son Richard Clayton (d. 1684) suffered a Recovery of the manor and of Lea Hall. His grandson Richard Clayton (son of Ralph) in 1716 settled these properties on his

marriage with Mary Jeffreys. His daughter and coheir Jane married Watkin Williams Wynne of Voelas. They had two daughters, Jane wife of the Hon. Charles Finch and Elizabeth wife of Thomas Assheton Smith, who sold the manor of Preston Gobalds and Lea Hall to Sir Thomas Tyrrwhitt Jones of Stanley, nephew and heir of Sir Thomas Jones, Sheriff of Shropshire in 1760.
His descendant Sir Raymond Robert Tyrwhitt was lord of the manor of Preston Gobalds and Patron of the benefice at the close of last century, but soon after the estate passed to the family of Bibby of Sansaw.
In 1937 the principal landowners in the parish were Brig.-Gen. A.H.O. LLoyd, Mrs. J. R. Campbell and S. Mayall Esq.
MERRINGTON (Meriton or Meriden) was a Domesday manor under another name; " the same Picot holds Gellidone " which was a manor of two hides. With Fitz it passed to the family of Gyros, and with the consent of Robert de Gyros the family of de Gulidon gave it to Haughmond Abbey. In 1279 the Abbot held the whole manor of Gulidon or Muridon. In the time of Henry VIII John Colfox held the manor by grant of the Abbot. His son Thomas by will devised Meriton Hall and two-thirds of the manor to his brother John, remainder to William (another brother), remainder to Nicholas (another brother). Adam Colfox, as elder brother of John and heir of Thomas, claimed against this, but the award upheld the will, and gave Adam the remaining third of the manor.
William Colfox of Meriton Hall married in 1564 Anne, daughter of John Prince, whose second husband was Leonard Chambers. Sarah, daughter and heir of William, married Thomas Corbett " of Caux," who according to a Newling MS. purchased the manor and hall from Colfox. In 1599 Thomas Corbett for £350 sold to Humphrey Lee of Langley the moiety of the manor of Myrryden and certain lands etc., except the capital messuage called Myrryden Hall then in the occupation of Anne Chambers, widow.
The other moiety remained with Thomas Corbett, whose daughter and heir brought an estate here to her husband Edward Muckleston (d. 1638), who sold some of her property in Meriton to Sir Humphrey Lee. The rest of it was inherited by his son John Muckleston, who died without issue in 1663 and left it to his brother Rowland, whose descendants owned it till 1817, when the Rev. John Fletcher Muckleston D.D. sold it, presumably to Sir Thomas Tyrrwhitt, who owned most of Meriton in 1822.
Edward Muckleston had another son Richard, father of Joseph Muckleston, who purchased property in Meriton from the daughters of Adam Colfox (d. 1664). This was doubtless the farm in Meriton owned by Robert Aglionby Slaney, representative of this branch of Muckleston, in 1851.
The family of Colfox entered their pedigree at the Heralds' Visitation of 1663. They had lived in the parish long previously, for William Colfoxe was assessed to Subsidy here in 1327. The family were resident in the parish as late as 1776.
Richard Hussey gent. and Roger Hussey gent. are both described as of Meriden. They were sons of Richard Hussey of

Harlescott. Richard married (1616) Anne Burde and was father of Richard Hussey of Alkmere and William Hussey of Meriden and Harlescott. Roger, who was buried in 1643, had two sons Robert and Andrew.
LEA HALL, in ancient days known as Reyner's Lee, was held under Lilleshall Abbey by Reyner de Lee in 1196. His descendant Roger de la Lee of Langley had a daughter and heir Petronella, who married her cousin Robert son of John de la Lee of Nordley. Their grandson Richard Lee of Langley was Sheriff of Shropshire in 1479. His son Fulc Lee died in 1516 seised of Lee juxta Preston.
The male line ended with the death of Sir Richard Lee Bart. in 1660, when Lea Hall, with Preston Gobalds, came to his daughter and coheir, Rachel wife of Ralph Clayton. Its subsequent history is similar to that of Preston Gobalds (see above), and in 1895 it was the property of Sir Raymond Tyrrwhit. A few years later it was purchased by Frank Bibby, on whose death in 1923 it was sold to J. L. Mayall.
Lea Hall is a fine old Elizabethan house with a dovecote, on the site of an older moated building. It was built by Richard Lee in 1581, but there are later additions of Jacobean date.
Blakeway's account of Preston Gobalds, as included in the Shrewsbury Liberties, will be found in Transactions, 2nd Ser., Vol. VIII, p. 165.
THE CHURCH OF S. MARTIN.
The old church, described by Bagshawe's Directory (1851) as of " primitive simplicity," was taken down in 1866, excepting the chancel walls, which still retain some ancient features. A sketch of it as it was in 1787 (from a drawing by the Rev. E. Williams) will be found in this volume.
The present church consists of a nave of three bays, chancel, South aisle, South porch and Western tower. The old octagonal font is figured in Eyton. In the church is a monument to an ecclesiastic with a cross patonce on his breast. In the vestry is a Library for the use of the officiating clergy, given by Charles Mather (see p. 78). The Mathers were a family of some position in the parish, though the Registers give no indication of this, and the name of Thomas Mather of Preston Gobalds occurs among " Disclaimers " at the Heralds' Visitation in 1663. Charles son of Thomas and Martha Mather was baptized at Preston Gobalds in 1668.
In the Edwardian Inventory of Church Goods (6 Ed. vi.) we have:-
"The p'yshe of P'ston Gobbl.: Sr. John Samerfyld curat ther John Haynes Will'm Symons Wardens Will'm Lopynton John Hayward p'sheners ther present the xvith day of August in the sixte yere of the Rayne of Kyng Edward the sixte before Sr. Adam Mytton Knyght Roger Luter & Rychard Wyytacres bailies of the towne of Salop that they have ii lytyll bells, fill vestments, ii albes and a cope. The color of the vestments ii green say, one white fustyan, another of chamlet."
In 1740 there were two bells. In the present tower there is one bell, cast by Abraham Rudhall in 1720.

The church appears to have been a dependency of S. Alkmund's till after the Dissolution, and there are no early lists of Incumbents. Until recent times they were styled Curates or Ministers. For some time past the patronage has been in the hands of the Bibby family.

THE REGISTERS.
VOLUME I, which has some leaves missing at the beginning, contains entries from 1601 to 1728. It consists of 50 parchment leaves, 12½ x 5½ in. in a leather cover. The writing is in places faded and stained with brown liquid. It is generally well written and fairly legible. It is in English throughout.
VOLUME II contains entries from 1729 to 1812, and consists of 23 parchment leaves in a stiff parchment cover, 13½ x 8 in. After 1754 there are a few marriage entries found also in Volume III. After 1793 the Burials are entered separately, followed by

Baptisms. It is in fair condition. On p. 7 there is a list of Books given by Charles Mather, which came under the care of the Vicar in 1749.
VOLUME III contains marriage entries from 1759 to 1812. It is a paper book in a parchment cover. In 1784 this Register was mislaid, but found in 1787, when a leaf was inserted from another Register. In addition the Marriages up to 1837 have been printed.
Besides the persons and families already mentioned in the above account, there are several entries of interest in this Register. Thomas Wollascot, whose son Richard was baptized in 1583, was a son of John Wollascot of Wollascot in the adjoining parish of Albrighton, where the family were seated for generations. Roger Thornes gent. (1604) was of Leighton and married Margaret daughter of John Poole. Francis Kynaston Esq. (1612), afterwards Sir Francis (1619) was of Oteley and married Margaret daughter of Humphrey Lee of Lea Hall. Symon Mericke, who married (1620) Mrs. Margaret Clive, was of Maesbrook, and she was the daughter of Edward Clive of Walford. Leonard and George Chambre (bap. 1577, 1578) were sons of Leonard Chambre, who married Anne (Prince) widow of William Colfox of Meriden. Mr. Andrew Bowdler (1639) was son of Samuel Bowdler of Harlescott, and married Margaret daughter of Richard Hussey of Meriden. Pontesbury Owen gent. (1640) was of Eaton Mascott and son of Edward Owen of Adbrightley. Capt. Richard Young, who married (1647) Margaret Helinge (Heylin ?), was of Felton Butler, and was the younger son of John Yonge of Pimley. The Dorrington family, which occurs several times in the Register, were of Sillinghurst in Woore; Peter Dorrington married Isabel daughter of Ralph Clayton of Lea Hall. Mr. Edward Floyd of Leaton (bur. 1693) was Edward LLoyd of Leaton Hall, father of Edward, High Sheriff in 1727. Alethea wife of Capt. Andrew Corbett (bur. 1715) was daughter of Ralph Clayton of Lea Hall.
Other entries of interest are those relating to Edward Fowler Esq. (1618), Walter Heynes gent. (1619), Edward Cholmeley gent. (1626), Peter Newton gent. (1637), Capt. The Register was transcribed by the Rev. E.D. Poole, a former Vicar, and was collated with the original Register by the Rev. W.G. Dimock Fletcher. A transcript of Marriages from 1813 to 1837 has been supplied by the present Vicar, with whose permission the Register is now printed. The sketches illustrating the present volume are the work of Mrs. Hayward, of Ticklerton.
