Tasley Registers.
TASLEY is a parish, 1½ mile north-west from Bridgnorth, in the diocese of Hereford, archdeaconry of Ludlow, rural deanery of Bridgnorth, and hundred of Stottesden. Its area is 1031 acres, and the population in 1881 was 77.
The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, gives this account of the Registers of Tasley:-" Tasley R. No. I, 1563-1812. No. II, Marr., 1754-1812."
The Marriage Register is unfortunately missing, and it is not known where it is, or what became of it. It seems to have been lost for some time, as the present rector has never seen or heard of it.
The only existing Register consists of forty-seven leaves of parchment, 11 inches by 5½ inches, in a parchment cover with a flap and brass clasp. It commences in 1563, and goes down to 1813.
In various parts of the Register a number of leaves, apparently blank ones, have been cut out. The paper fly-leaf at the end of the volume contains nine entries from 1810 to 1813. The entries from 1563 onwards were apparently written in this parchment book circa 1630 to 1640, as the handwriting appears to be the same down to about that period or even later. After this there are a variety of handwritings in the register. The entries from 1714 to 1732 seem to be in one hand, from 1732 to 1743 in another and plain hand, in 1744 and 1745 in quite a different hand. From 1746 to 1750, and from 1756 to 1758, and in 1763 and 1764, the entries are in an illiterate hand. Those from 1752 to 1755 are in the handwriting of John Whitehouse, from 1759 to 1762 in a small, neat hand, and from 1765 to 1774 in the handwriting of John Reynolds, curate. John Pryce, curate, made the entries in 1777, and Joseph Morris, rector, from 1778 to 1813. On the whole the register is in good condition and legible throughout. The entries are almost wholly in English.
As there are only two entries of marriages between 1753 and 1812 in the existing register, it would seem desirable that the transcript of the Tasley registers at Hereford should at an early date be examined for the years from 1753 to 1812, and the entries of marriages extracted therefrom and printed, in order to make the register as complete as possible.
The principal entries in the register are those relating to the family of Acton of Gatacre Park, a branch of the Actons of Aldenham. They are usually termed " esq." in the register. The families of Habberly, Hardwick, Paull, Shaw, Guest, Pratt, Bateman, Whitehead, and Zouche, are styled " Mr." The entries relating to the families of Candland, Corbett, Corfield, Gough, Harley, Lacon, Moseley, and Smalman, are of interest.

The parish of Tasley was in the time of Edward the Confessor under the sway of the Collegiate Church of St. Gregory, Morville, which was handed over to the Abbey of Shrewsbury shortly after the Norman Conquest. The living is a Rectory of the value of £5 6s. 8d. in K.B. The old Church of St. Peter and St. Paul was built of timber, with a clerk's house at one end. It was rebuilt of brick in 1840, chiefly at the expense of the Rev. William Moore, rector, and Colonel Acton, patron, and was restored and decorated in 1898 at the expense of Captain Acton; it consists of chancel, nave, and western tower. It contains a beautifully carved oak screen, reading-desk, pulpit, and communion chairs, from the old Church; also monuments to the Rev. William Moore, rector, 1848; Francis Moore, 1841; Mrs. Helen Beatrice Brooke, 1897; Rowland Hill, gent., 1780; and Mabel Sparks, 1831; and a small brass with this inscription: "Anna, uxor Geor. Bott, rect. de Tasley, obiit. 21 Feb., 1619." The Actons have been lords of the manor and patrons of the rectory for about 200 years.
The present transcript of the register was made by Mr. T. R. Horton, and it has since been collated with the original by the Rev. W. G. D. Fletcher, who has also passed the proof-sheets through the press. It is here printed by kind permission of the Rev. Dr. Lucas, the present rector.
