PREFACE.

There is little evidence in the short register of Courtenay of any personal action in the diocese of Hereford, except in the lists of ordinations, which are unusually full, containing in the earlier pages the names of many persons connected with the diocese of Exeter, whom at the Bishop's request he ordained for him at Tiverton. The notable incidents in his career belong almost entirely to the period of his tenure of the See of London or to his official life as Primate at Canterbury, and there seems no reason for mentioning them here.
